Richard Hammond: I’m unpredictable, difficult and I sulk

The Grand Tour presenter on near misses, teenage daughters and cancel culture. By Michael Odell

Everybody knows that the television presenter Richard Hammond has come close to death in two separate car crashes. The first time was in 2006 when he was filming an episode of Top Gear and his jet-powered dragster crashed doing 319mph. Hammond was in a coma for two weeks. The second was in 2017 when he was filming an episode of The Grand Tour and his electric supercar skidded off a Swiss hillside, rolled down a hill and caught fire. Hammond needed ten screws inserted in his knee.

That was the one that also nearly wrecked his marriage. His wife, Mindy, famously issued a warning: “I’ve told him three strikes and he’s out.”
