Social news website Reddit passed the 1 billion page views milestone last month. The data comes from the website's monthly Google Analytics page, which now has a new comma for the third number.
Last month, Reddit posted its traffic statistics for the year 2010. The website saw its page views triple from 250 million in January 2010 to 829 million in December 2010. One month later, that number grew another 21 percent to 1 billion.
"Never has a single punctuation mark brought us so much joy," a Reddit spokesperson said in a statement. "There are only about 100 sites on the entire Internet that get a billion pageviews in a single month, and now reddit can put on its smoking jacket and join that exclusive club. The New York Times isn't on the membership list, nor is Expedia, Weather.com, about.com, or Fox News. In your face, meteorologists! This is an accomplishment that all redditors should take pride in, because people wouldn't keep arriving in droves --- and coming back --- if not for the community that you've created here."
Reddit's growth can be largely attributed to the fact that its biggest competitor, Digg, has pretty much fallen apart. The website's v4 redesign annoyed the majority of Digg's users and a huge number decided to leave for Reddit, which has constantly struggled with being portrayed as Digg's much smaller and less significant cousin.
