Root words are basic words before having prefixes or suffixes added to them. They are called root words because they are the basis from which other words can grow. One root word can be used within lots of other words by adding a letter or groups of letters to the beginning or end of the root word. You can use a root word to help you with other spelling. If you recognise the root of a tricky word you are reading, it can help you to work out what the new word and what it means.
