Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin is in line to become the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin, the former Premier of the Soviet Union. Putin has served as the President of Russia since the early 2000s and is now running for a fifth term.
Vladimir Putin's entry into leadership roles began in 1999 when he was appointed as one of the three deputy prime ministers of Russia. He was then later appointed as the acting PM of the Government of Russia by Boris Yeltsin, who also saw Putin as his successor.
In December 1999, Putin became acting President after the abrupt resignation of Boris Yeltsin. In 2000, Putin was elected the President of Russia, starting his first term. He stayed in office till 2004 and was re-elected to office in 2004 and stayed till 2008.
Due to Russian law prohibiting two consecutive terms, Putin stepped down to the role of Prime Minister from 2008 to 2012 under President Dmitry Medvedev. However, due to his gap, Putin was able to run for a third term as President and was elected in 2012.
Putin was then elected for a fourth term as President in 2018 and will remain in office till March 2024. With the Russian Elections scheduled for March 17, 2024, the incumbent president has announced his candidacy for a fifth term.
In 2020, Putin signed an executive order for an amendment to the Russian Constitution, which allows him to run for two additional six-year terms.
Considering his entry into Russian leadership in 2000, Putin has held the prime leadership role of the Russian Federation for the last 24 years. With this, Putin has become one of the longest-serving Russian leaders since Stalin. If he is re-elected for a fifth term, Putin would complete 30 years as Russian leader, surpassing Stalin's record.
Joseph Stalin served as the leader of the Soviet Union for 29 years from 1924 to 1953. He served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union.

Russian Elections 2024 Scheduled For March

Russian presidential elections are scheduled to begin on March 15 and end on March 17. Despite three more candidates in the race, the post is expected to go to Putin once again. With the decree passed in 2020, Putin could be in power as the Russian leader till at least 2036.
