El Alfabeto Spanish Alphabet Pronunciation Guide /Student Binder Reference Sheet

El Alfabeto Spanish Alphabet Pronunciation Guide is a handy two-page reference sheet (or one page if you print double-sided!) for the Spanish alphabet.

This reference sheet is concise, yet contains all the information beginning and intermediate Spanish students need to learn the Spanish alphabet and how to pronounce letters in Spanish words.

The sheet is arranged in columns. The first column shows the Spanish letter. If there is an exclamation point next to the letter, it means that the letter has additional information covered on page 2. The second column - “How to Say This Letter’s Name” - does just that. It is how the letter name is pronounced, and if students read vertically down this column, they will be reciting the Spanish alphabet in no time.

The third column - “This Letter Makes the Sound” - demonstrates how the letter is pronounced phonetically in Spanish words. If there are two sounds separated by a slash (/), it is because this letter can be prounced multiple ways. Any letter that has muliple sounds is marked with an exclamation point and discussed on the second page.

If students are unsure how to pronouce the sound, the next column - “It makes the same sounds as these English words” - gives an example of the sound in a familiar English word. Finally, the last column - “Examples of this letter in Spanish words” - shows Spanish words that contain the letter prounced in that way.

Page 2 details the different rules for how certain letters are pronounced in Spanish words.

It contains:

- 27 letters of the current Spanish alphabet, plus a separate section for ll, ch, and rr

- alternate pronunciations for C and Z (some parts of Spain vs other Spanish-speaking areas)

- V is pronounced (buh)

- regional variations for the pronunciation of X

This handy reference sheet is a wonderful companion to your Alfabeto work and makes a great, concise binder sheet for student reference.

Because of the complexity of the rules (and the grid layout), I have found this sheet to work best with my 6th graders and up. I recommend it for middle school and high school. If you teach younger students, please see my store for more appropriate options.
