Biography

  • Amy McDonald (born 25th August, 1987) is a Scottish singer-songwriter and guitarist from Bishopbriggs, Scotland, offering pop-folk with a tinge of Celtic roots.

Inspired by the likes of Francis Healy and Travis, McDonald picked up a guitar at age 12, teaching herself the instrument through using resources on the internet. She quickly grew and developed her talent before beginning to perform as a solo artist, playing at small venues across Scotland, mixing original material with covers.

Her constant touring, gaining support slots performing alongside Travis and Paolo Nutini, led McDonald to gain festival appearances at Glastonbury and T in the Park. This exposure led to a record deal with Vertigo Records (part of Universal) in 2007, through which she issued her first singles "Poison Prince" and "Mr. Rock & Roll" which peaked in the top 20 of the charts.

Her debut album, "This Is The Life" was released the same year to huge success. The album reached number one in the UK, Netherlands, Switzerland and Denmark, as well as number 92 on the US Billboard 200. The fourth single from the album, of the same name, was McDonald's most successful, charting at 28 in the UK and number one in five European countries. It was certified Platinum in Germany and Belgium and Gold in Spain and Switzerland.

Following the album's success, McDonald was invited to perform on a numb roof television shows, spreading her music to a wider audience, performing on This Morning, Friday Night Project and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Her second album, "A Curious Thing" came out in 2010, achieving further critical acclaim. This was followed by 2012's "Life in a Beautiful Light."

Throughout her career, McDonald has won several rewards, including Best International Rock/Pop Female at the Echo Awards in 2011 and Best International Album at the Swiss Music Awards.

Live reviews

  • The room is filled with smoke, dark, and light florescent lights. And then like a breath of fresh air, Amy Macdonald hits the stage. Her makeup is flawless, dress is on par, and her shoes are slamming! What more can you ask for? And then you hear the first note.

For such a small woman, you often wonder how a big strong voice can be coming out of her. Pure raw talent! She has a very unique and distinguishing voice. As she belts out each note, you can most definitely heat her Scottish accent. All while she is singing, her fingers strum along quickly to the tune of her guitar. In between songs, she instructs the crowd into a slow clap, while gearing up for the next hit. Once she gets them riled up, she gives them what they want.

The crowd is relatively calm, but yet they beg for more. Sometimes the crowd will yell out requests for what song to sing next. In between the sets that she sings, she thanks the crowd immensely. Amy gives it her all, with every song she sings. Every word she sings, is crisp, every note is in her sultry raspy voice. Amy is different from other singers, but she does not disappoint.

  • I travelled to Glasgow from Manchester to see Amy for the 11th time since 2010 (lol) Prior to Glasgow the Sheffield City Hall 2013 (Rearrange) and the Islington Assembly Halls 2016 were gigs I didn't think she could top... But this is Amy! Her home City and of course the WORLD famous Barrowland Ballrooms WOW - she knocked it out of the ballpark! I attended the Friday 15th and had bought my ticket pre-sale months prior and it was worth the wait! Amy just knows how to interact with the audience both young and old, from home or afar! In my opinion Amy has developed into a true professional and she does not disappoint when you see her live, add to that the obvious rapport with her backing band and the recipe is a top class performance! I waited months and was really looking forward to the gig, my round trip was about 400 miles with my accommodation in Milngavie, but she worth every mile and every pound it cost to see her in Glasgow! If you get the chance to see Amy live - do not hesitate, I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed - Amy Macdonald the UK Rock Queen !!!!

  • This was a brilliant show. Excellent musicians and singer who really engaged the audience. It was refreshing for an artist not to reel out a load of songs but to put on a real show which involved the audience. Amy was funny, open and honest and you felt like her friend who had turned up for a jam in her front room. The show was very intimate due to the venue, her disarming style and the wonderful sound set up - you could hear every word she sang and every note played. This must rank as one of the best concerts I have attended..brilliant. The seating was a bit cramped but helped with the intimacy. A singer songwriter of the highest order ..don’t miss her if you get a chance to see her!!

  • Amy is a great entertainer with an incredible voice. However, the concert was a big disappointment simply because of a terrible sound - the mix as such was good but it was simply way to loud which destroyed all songs as there was no dynamics at all whatsoever simply due to sound reasons. In addition Amy should look for another band. As it happens with songwriters that have a random band promoting the tour, these guys were just playing the songs with zero ambition. Especially the guitar player should rather play at funerals instead of being on stage promoting that type of music and show. Overall the worst concert at the Vega - and that was not because of Amy.

  • Walked past the theatre that afternoon to see that it was advertised as "acoustic", was v disappointed as this had not appeared either on the web or the ticket. I'm sure she could do a good acoustic show, just wasn't what I'd been looking forward to.

Needn't have worried, altho apparently she normally has more backing, the accompanying band were excellent and the only truly acoustic no was the very well done Dancing in the Dark.

Excellent show all round from the band, sound mixing, and of course Amy's great voice.

    Fantastic.

  • SIMPLY BRILLIANT!!!!!!

Her latest album UNDER STARS,is my favourite, love it.

So this tour showcasing UNDER STARS will also be (maybe biased) in my opinion her best ever tour,

Her band gives the set a greater depth and stronger feel.

I seen three concerts ,Birmingham,Nottingham and Liverpool, plus her pre album LONDON comeback gig,

each time the set get stronger and better as they hone their skills and become tighter.

I HOPE AND PRAY SHE DOES NOT DISAPPEAR OFF THE RADAR SCREEN AGAIN,BUT KEEPS ACTIVE.

  • I saw Amy MacDonald at the Islington Assembly Hall last night, if she can sell 850 tickets in under 5 minutes, there must have been a lot of disappointed people who missed out on tickets. The hall was packed and the support act did a superb job of getting the crowd going.

Amy came on at 9 pm to a rapturous reception and had people dancing in even in the aisles.

A good selection of hits from all 3 albums were played and a couple of new songs.

Can't wait to see her at the next concert

  • I usually never do this but I feel Amy really deserves this. Her first concert of the tour really set the bar! She was witty and charming, really making the audience feel appreciated. The set was full of her greatest hits and songs from her newest album, and the ratio between calm and more upbeat songs was well thought through! Never a dull moment, I really enjoyed myself and would definitely recommend seeing Amy live!

  • what a wonderful show ! We're from the Netherlands and want to see Amy in her own country, in the beautiful place of Edinburgh.

We enjoyed her show, the way she sings (what a voice), how she tells, she's funny and honest. Like the way she says "thank you" :-)

    Great songs and great sound.

Hope one day this show comes on CD or DVD

kind regards, Inge and Roy from the Netherlands

  • This was a great venue that I had not been to before.... the acoustics were spot on and sounded great.

Except for a few loud mouths who kept shouting out , the gig was great, great music, great interaction with the fans and a great sing along.

It was clear to see that everyone was enjoying themselves and the age of the people there was quite varied too.
