NOTES
Lucia Moholy presents the critic, photographer, and teacher Franz Roh in a unique manner that is both intimate and monumental. This is one in a series of portraits Moholy made in the 1920s of her teachers and fellow students at the Bauhaus school. Roh’s eyes are closed and his expression is ambiguous, leaving the viewer to freely examine the magnified features of his face. To Moholy, a face was a formal challenge—a complex interrelationship of shapes inviting exploration and scrutiny.
