The breed was developed by Max von Stephanitz using various traditional German herding dogs from 1899.

It has since been used in many other types of work.
These include search and rescue, cadaver searching, narcotics detection, explosives detection, accelerant detection and mine detection… dog, disability assistance, among others.
They have keen sense of smell and their ability to work regardless of distractions.
