As the Moon wanes and is rising later each night this is a great time to see the Milky Way Band at Galactic Center located between the constellations of the Archer and the Scorpion. On the cover of "The Planetarian", the journal of the International Planetarium Society: it's our new volumetric 3D model of the Cat's Eye Nebula. That was a pleasant surprise. On page 8 of the current edition (Sept. 2023) is our article "DISASSEMBLE VOLUMETRIC MODELS FOR DIDACTIC PURPOSES? SURE, WHY NOT?" in which we describe our new technique of separating different parts of a nebula or galaxy to help increase the didactic impact during live and recorded presentations in the planetarium. #planetarium #planetarian #astronomy #3D

Now it is the turn to make the pillar that holds Mars that was lost. There are no two alike in the planetarium since they were made by hand, so this one could not be less; similar shape, but not exactly the same (the one in my hand is the pillar of Jupiter). Apart from the fact that it is the shortest of all and will not hold moons since in the year this planetarium was built the moons of Mars had not yet been discovered. Thanks for watching! I have heard a number of times that Christopher Columbus should not be given credit for discovering America because he basically got lost in the process. His whole process was about risk and assumptions. The first assumption was that India was due west of his location. He found out that was wrong but ended up amending the maps of the time to include a new continent. The first of many risks was that he only had an east-west line to navigate by. Longitude was not even used for navigation until 200 years later! Read “Longitude” to get a great history of this very important concept. So, Columbus navigated using only one standard of navigation into uncharted waters to an unknown location based on a single assumption. It is interesting that we hail the astronauts going to Mars based on some of the same assumptions. “Oh but we know so much more.” I hear. The Portuguese were the greatest sailors of that time and thought they know so much more. Also, colonial prerogatives were the focus of travel. Are we colonizing Mars? The answer is yes. What are we going to do with life forms we find on Mars? Use them for resources we need on Earth? Conquer them? Before anyone lays judgement on Columbus, think about the fear that he experienced; the leadership that he embraced and the challenges he overcame. Also think about the composition of the Mars crew. Do they know that they are on a similar mission as Columbus? Are they accepting that in 500 or so years past their mission that they will be second guessed by people who call them invaders and murderers and will say that they got lost or missed the target point by a few miles? Let’s all put our lives in perspective and stop judging the feats of those before us. After all, are the Wright Brothers responsible for the violence on aircraft flights or flight disasters? We’re they incompetent because they did not have seats for the pilot on the first flight? Think about it and please read and research. It is so helpful. Thank you for allowing me to vent. Being American of Italian background (notice I did not say Italian-American) Columbus is important to me. Also, research the beginnings of Columbus Day. It was done to right an injustice that happened in Louisiana that caused some deaths. But I will let you look that up. Thanks again
