They took portable ops and made it a masterpiece. The art, gameplay, characters were all so well done.
Dare I say this even had one of the best story lines that ever graced a portable console?
Snake in the palm of your hands!
Quite possibly the best game on the PSP not only for its epic, long-lasting single-player story that sets the stage for Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain but also for its highly addictive, long-lived multiplayer. I'll strictly be focusing on the single player in this review however, since I played that most recently, but I do think it's important to note that they somehow nailed online play on the PSP. The story takes place between MGS3 and MGS5 and focuses once again on Big Boss or Naked Snake. While the style of gameplay is similar, the UI, controls, and even cinematics are completely different from any of the games previously.
The cinematics play out like a comic book rather than a film, and they feature hands-on QTEs throughout to help immerse the audience in the cutscenes. While I don't love this approach normally, I felt it worked really well in this setting and on this system. Kojima most likely knew he couldn't get the quality he wanted on the PSP so he opted out of doing his classic large-budget cutscenes and instead pivoted to the unique comic style. I enjoyed when the interactions with the cinematics felt immersive or more in-depth with the scene, but personally I could have done without some of the QTE's but that's preferential.
The gameplay sets the scene for where the series is headed in terms of overall gameplay and style. One of the biggest features added in this game that stays in the series is the base building, as Big Boss must help build his fortress and followers to its crowning glory that we know it is in MG and MG2. While this and some of the gameplay can feel a bit tedious and repetitive, I found it to be super addictive and rarely, if ever, boring! Depending on what sections you level they'll give you different upgrades and advancements for your playthrough like weapons, items, camouflage's, etc.
