Dash Snow's Polaroids Present A Wild Time

Dash Snow: A Life Untamed

The Polaroid craze has perhaps come and gone, but there is one artist whose work transcends trends, and that artist is Dash Snow, who passed away in 2009.

Perhaps it was his recklessly romantic lifestyle he shared with his Irak Crew or the mythology of an artist who left this world too soon, but Dash Snow's work leaves a lasting impression, regardless of the viewer's tastes.

Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin is hosting an exhibition of the alluring artist's work which consists of a Super 8 film, "Familae Erase (2008)," showing for the first time and a collection of the artist's signature series of Polaroids. For the artist, the images functioned as a way to document and remember his intoxicated experiences (which were many).

Compiled from a collection of nearly 8,000 photographs, Mary Blair Hansen of the Dash Snow Archive culled 400 images specifically for the show. The images show a life untamed and coming off at the hinges, never fully acknowledging how involved the artist was in each picture. For Snow and his Irak crew, art imitated life or rather they became one in the same. If it weren't for Snow's boisterous and storied life, we may not care as much, but the fact of the matter is that Snow's work flowed effortlessly from within. He lived his life freely, in way that some only dream of, and for that his art became an attractive testament to living outside of common conventions.

Dash Snow will be on display at Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin from February 11th to March 24th, 2012.
