Manufactured by the Starr Arms Company of New York City, this cap and ball percussion arm is an original double-action Model 1858 Army revolver in fair to good overall condition. These weapons were in production from the late 1850’s through the early 1860s with a total of some 23,000 units produced at the company’s Binghamton and Yonkers New York facilities. This Starr DA revolver, which features traces of original factory bluing on the frame, also shows two government cartouches stamped on both grips.  Revolver also has numerous inspector marks on the barrel, frame and cylinder.   Patent date stampings on the frame are strong and sharp and read “STARR ARMS CO. NEW YORK” and “STARR’S PATENT JAN.15, 1856”.

This sidearm is a .44 caliber, double action model with a 6-shot unrebated cylinder, a 6” round barrel and with nipples protruding from the back of the cylinder.  One of the angled indexing lugs on the cylinder is broken off but can be repaired. The clearly stamped serial number of “19605” appears on the cylinder while “19997” is on the hammer and hammer rest.  Grips are of one-piece walnut and in very good condition with few dings and dents.  Pivot edge on the drop-down barrel hinge area shows a very slight bend caused by opening the barrel too far down.  Screws are original but not buggered up.  Areas of the frame show traces of old bluing.  Mechanics are strong.  This original Civil War Starr Double Action Model 1858 Army percussion revolver is a classic sidearm to add to any collection.
