Known for his roles in The Boys In The Band, The Sinner and big screen flicks like Magic Mike, Matt Bomer is one of Hollywood's most handsome and talented leading men.

Back in 2018 Bomer sat down with GQ to discuss his style icons, grooming regime and how to get that expertly placed barnet, which is arguably one of the best in Tinseltown. At the time Bomer said: “It’s pretty low maintenance. If I wash it and comb it back it will usually fall into some semblance of a presentable shape.”

Since then, we've tried extremely hard to replicate his slicked-back, perfectly coiffed ’do, to no avail. So we asked GQ’s go-to barber, Joe Mills, to show us exactly what we need to do to get it right.

“Matt Bomer's loose, casual 1950s inspired quiff works so well with his hair type and face shape,” says Mills. “This isn’t a short back and sides with a skin fade – it's far softer and more considered. Ask your barber or stylist to scissor-cut the back and sides down in to the neck. You don’t want to see any scalp so don't let them go too close.

“You need to keep a few centimetres of hair so that you can push it back, and then through the top you need a minimum of 3.5 to 5 inches of hair so you can create that height and shape. Ideally you'll have a little more length through the front, tapering back into the crown of your head. Ask for the top to be texturised as this will help with the styling.

“This style works well with a low parting. It doesn’t matter which side you style it, but a good tip is to try pushing it the opposite side to how you normally wear it as this will help with the lift you need on the quiff at the front.

“Styling-wise, first shampoo your hair with Triumph and Disaster's shampoo then towel dry and apply a good two pence-sized amount of Mills x Primark styling cream to damp hair.

“Then reach for your hair dryer (as ever I recommend the Dyson Supersonic) and Denman Vent brush and start to blow dry all of your hair straight back off of your face.

“As it starts to dry look for where your hair naturally parts on the side. Use that as your guide and work your hair back away from your face and over in that direction. Make sure you dry the side flat and back to create the shape.

“Use the vent brush to create the lift at the front with the air flow from the hair dryer. If you have fine hair then I would suggest you use Oliver Woods Formentera Salt Spray instead of a styling cream as this will help with creating the body you need for this look.”
