Very interesting, shocking and heart-rendering memoire of a boy's life in Ukraine towards the end of WWII. The Ukranians were caught between the Germans and the Russians and suffered terribly from astrocities inflicted on them by both armies. Even 'peacetime' brought new terrors under the communists.
The Ukranians' hatred of the Russians is understandable. They are a hardworking, resilient nation and because they were/are the bread basket of Europe, were exploited by Stalin during his collectivist regime.
How this family survived and remained in tact during the reign of Stalin and WWII is a miracle - Babunia, the grandmother, played a big role in it.
