Once you become a parent, your days of leaving the house with a small purse holding only a wallet, keys and phone are pretty much over. Every parent knows that getting out the door with a baby takes 100 times longer than when you're by yourself, and requires a ton of additional bag space to store all of their odds and ends, from diapers to snacks to extra clothes — because nothing is more stressful than encountering a diaper emergency while out, only to realize you left something important at home. The good news is that the right diaper bag can make all the difference when you're away from home.

The experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute's Textiles Lab review parenting products of all kinds, from maternity clothes to diapers to kids' backpacks and more. To find the best diaper bags, we looked at both the newest and most popular styles to see which came out on top in terms of capacity, convenience, comfort and style. Whether you're looking for something to toss over your shoulder on a quick run to the grocery store or need something a bit more heavy duty (say, for a set of twins while on a trip to Disney World), this guide has it all. From luxurious leather totes to nondescript backpacks, the perfect diaper bag for dad, mom, grandma, grandpa or any other caregiver is here.

Pros
  • Lightweight and spacious
  • Stylish design with useful and innovative features
  • Comes with must-have accessories
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Not for rugged use

There's something about this Dagne Dover backpack that simply makes life with a baby that much easier. Not only did it win a Good Housekeeping Parenting Award in both 2022 and 2021, but many of our testers and experts swear by this bag, continuing to use it even after their kids are out of diapers, since it's such a stylish pick.

It is roomy, lightweight and has smart design features that make things easier on parents. The front zipper space can be used as a wipes compartment, the back has a luggage sleeve for travel and there are several handy pockets and compartments throughout. "This diaper bag was so much better than similar backpack diaper bags," says one tester. "The look and design are so high end, I was really proud to carry it around." Indeed, it comes in several different colors and doesn't look like a typical baby bag.

While this bag is pricey, it comes with lots of add-ons that you would otherwise have to purchase separately, like the straps that connect it to your stroller and a garment bag for dirty clothes. In our testing, we found that the straps were quite comfortable and had no trouble staying in place, the zippers were secure and the bag overall was extremely roomy with lots of various compartments for storage. Just note: the neoprene fabric may pill or snag if it's subject to rough surfaces.

Pros
  • Separate sections great for organizing
  • Comes in a variety of colors
  • Versatile style
  • Hands-free
Cons
  • Not as stylish materials
  • Smaller overall capacity

This fan-favorite bag has over 30,000 reviews on Amazon with over 26,500 of them being 5-stars. Its hands-free backpack design makes it easy for parents to carry everything they need (including baby) without having to worry about dropping something or not having enough hands. The bag features a wet wipe dispenser so you can grab a wipe without having to unzip, an extra pocket for your own wallet, keys or phone, insulated bottle pockets and more.

While we haven't hands-on tested this bag just yet, the rave Amazon reviews speak for themselves. One reviewer said, "this bag stores everything we need; I love the many storage spaces. I easily had what the whole family needed, from snacks to cups to a change of clothes." Our experts appreciate the versatility of the style, the separate sections for easy organizing and the lower cost. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite have the same overall capacity as some of the other options on this list and the materials don't look quite as stylish, but it can still get the job done on a budget without looking like a cliché diaper bag.

Pros
  • Spacious with several functional compartments
  • Convertible design can be carried multiple ways
  • Quality materials include a cotton twill exterior with leather accents
Cons
  • Can be more cumbersome to carry than a backpack

For the newborn stages when your baby needs a lot of stuff on the go, this popular style from PBK is spacious enough to hold everything, yet it doesn't feel too bulky and has sturdy straps to wear as a tote or messenger bag. Besides infants, it's also ideal for parents of multiples or longer outings when you need to pack extra essentials. Our experts found that in comparison, this bag was able to hold more than similar styles, and looked cute while doing so.

The bag has three large compartments; the main one in the middle zips shut to keep contents safe and has several pockets to keep you organized. Two smaller compartments on the outside can hold bottles or other essentials that you need to grab without digging through the bag. Like most diaper bags, it has rings that can hook onto a stroller and comes with its own changing pad. As a bonus, the outside can be monogrammed and it makes a perfect baby shower gift.

Pros
  • Low cost with great value
  • Looks like a regular backpack for adults
  • Lots of storage compartments
Cons
  • A few reviewers complained about fabric durability

If you're looking for a diaper bag that appears nothing like a diaper bag, look no further than this one that looks more like a travel backpack. It has a gender neutral design, making it great for dads, moms and other caregivers watching the baby, and has lots of pockets so you can easily find what you need. Its clever compartments include insulated bottle pockets and easy-to-access wipes holders. There's even an anti-theft pouch against your back to store valuables.

Our experts also appreciate the extra wide opening that makes it easy to see and grab everything you need. Another noteworthy feature: It includes built-in clips on the shoulder straps so you can attach it directly onto the stroller handle bar — no extra hooks needed. The shoulders straps themselves are both padded for comfort and reinforced for durability.

Pros
  • Stylish and functional
  • Vegan leather is easier to wipe clean
  • Roomy interior with organizational pockets
Cons
  • A bit heavier than other diaper bags

If you're a fashion-forward mama or pop, this backpack by Freshly Picked is as useful as it is stylish. It's made of chic vegan leather with cute accents on the outside, yet the spacious elastic and zippered compartments inside are built like a diaper bag. It also comes with the essentials, like a changing pad and stroller-attaching rings. Besides looking more like a regular bag rather than styles that scream "baby," it also lets you be hands-free to chase after a wriggly toddler.

Our pros appreciated that it was spacious enough to fit in a travel potty seat during the toilet training days. They did find it to be heavier than others we reviewed, but it also comes in a mini size in case you're looking for something smaller and lighter. While this is primarily a backpack, the adjustable straps are also convertible so you can wear it like a crossbody or shoulder bag. Plus, the brand offers a variety of other vegan leather styles for parents who love the look of leather but are looking for something a bit cheaper and easier to clean, like the Minimal Diaper Bag Backpack or the Seoul Backpack.

Pros
  • Large storage compartment good for multiple kids
  • Features luggage sleeve to make traveling easy
  • Includes packing cubes
Cons
  • Bulkier than other options

Two kids mean twice as many things you've got to tote around, and the Duo Weekender by Skip Hop makes it as easy as pie to ensure you have everything you need. Whether you're looking for the perfect diaper bag for twins, or just have two little ones who still need a lot of bag space, this extra large option means you don't have to worry about bringing a second bag or deciding which thing you need to leave at home to make everything fit.

Our experts found this bag to be more spacious than some other options on the list to help carry a larger load, and we appreciate that it comes with two separate packing cubes and front pockets to help organization and keep different items isolated. Great for long getaways or just that everyday trip to the park, this bag includes insulated double bottle pockets, a handy stroller attachment, luggage sleeve that easily slides over the handle of your carry on, adjustable and removable shoulder straps and more.

Pros
  • Organized and easy to access
  • Machine washable
  • Comes in lots of prints
Cons
  • Expensive
  • A bit wide as a backpack

Whether your kids are spread out in age or you have three under three, you'll need a bag that lets you hold everything and is easy to access. This one has several large and small compartments, plus a unique opening that zips down all the way so you don't have to sift through a deep bag to find what you need. Our experts appreciate the insulated baby bottle pockets, variety of straps for different carrying methods, stroller hooks and pockets great for separating different items and organizing while storing. It can even be worn as a hands-free backpack style. The metal luggage feet at the bottom of the bag mean you can set it on the floor while still preventing excess wear and tear on the fabric of the bag.

Its convertible style and added top handle make grabbing it easier, and help ensure that this bag can grow with you and your little one as your needs evolve. There are tons of prints to choose from, from solid black to a coastal design covered in mini boats. The best part: This bag is entirely machine washable, so you don't have to fret over any baby-related disasters.

Pros
  • Larger capacity than some other options
  • Zippered closure means nothing will fall out
  • Separate sections help keep things organized
Cons
  • Not hands-free like a backpack

Families that love to travel and those just looking for something that can carry a big load will both appreciate this shoulder bag from Herschel. While testing, our experts loved that it held a substantial amount and had a zipper closure to ensure nothing could fall out. They also appreciated that there were three separate sections so it was easy to keep things organized, and that it was lightweight enough to keep you from straining too hard to pick it up.

"I still use it for car trips, even though my kids are no longer in diapers," one tester said, noting that they can easily fit the toddler travel potty seat inside to use for her young child on bigger toilets. Featuring internal and external storage pockets, stroller attachment clips, a folding changing mat and more, this bag will be your new best friend during that next family vacation.

Pros
  • Stylish look
  • Features removable pocket insert
  • Available in a variety of colors
  • Can be monogramed for personalization
Cons
  • Pricier than some other options

For those looking for something a bit more luxurious, this real leather diaper bag from Leatherology will have you walking around in style. The brand is a favorite of many celebrities, and this style in particular has five removable insulated pockets, a removable leather wristlet for your phone, cards and wallet, a metal zip closure and more. Our experts particularly like that this style is customizable with the option to pick from 11 different colors and even monogram it. Plus, since the pockets inserts are removable, you can easily keep wearing this bag long after your little one has moved on from diapers.

While we haven't gotten our hands on this exact bag to test out, our pros have experience with other Leatherology products, including its crossbody bags, and have found the brand's leather to be buttery soft and hold up great to wear and tear. While it's definitely on the pricier side, it's certainly high quality but won't break the bank like some other designer diaper bags out there.

Pros
  • Hands-free
  • More spacious than a regular fanny pack
  • Easy to pack and organize your items
  • Adjustable straps
Cons
  • Smaller than other options so won't replace your main diaper bag

Lugging around a giant diaper bag can be draining, so this fanny pack alternative is wonderful for quick trips to the store or shorter outings when you don't want to carry such a heavy load. Plus, it was a GH 2022 Parenting Award winner for its easy-to-adjust straps and surprisingly spacious interior that lets you carry all the basics. Our testers loved how easy it was to pack everything they needed in this smaller bag and appreciated the two compartments that helped keep them organized.

Besides being more more spacious than your typical fanny pack, it also includes a slim changing pad. And if you don't want to wear it around your hips, you can also carry it like a crossbody and still be hands free to chase after your little one. While it won't replace your main diaper bag, it's a great option for grabbing on the go when you're not going to be out and about for too long.

Pros
  • Bigger changing pad
  • Convenient storage pockets
  • Versatile on its own or in other bags
Cons
  • Can't hold as much as a diaper bag

Instead of carrying around an entire diaper bag everywhere you go, this clutch is great for shorter outings where you only need a few things. The handy changing pad is wide and covers a larger area than the compact ones included with diaper bags, plus it has several pockets to hold diapers, wipes and other essentials. There's a strap so you can carry it on its own, but it also fits into any bag (diaper bag or not) or underneath the stroller.

The changing pad itself zips off in case you want to separate the storage section, and it easily wipes clean. With a large mesh pocket that the brand says can hold up to four diapers, a translucent wipes case and a front zippered pocket for smaller items, you'll be able to fit all the important things inside. Since it's less expensive than an actual diaper bag, it's a smart buy that's versatile and convenient.

Pros
  • Top-rated on Amazon
  • Comfortable features for parents
  • Plenty of pockets for storage
Cons
  • Some users complain that it's heavy

This brand prides itself on its high-quality, water-resistant poly fabric that's made to stand up to wear and tear. It's also one of the highest-rated diaper bags on Amazon, with over 5,900 reviews and an average 4.8-star rating. Its classic black style that looks more like a travel backpack makes it a versatile diaper bag for dads, moms and other caregivers, especially ones with varying aesthetics.

On top of that, it has functional features like 14 pockets for storage, insulated compartments, padded shoulder straps, stroller attachment clips and more. Its wide zipper section makes it easy to see everything you've packed and grab exactly what you need on the first try. How we test diaper bags

line break

The Textiles Lab analysts and parenting product experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute evaluated dozens of diaper bags by researching the materials, specs and noteworthy features, then reviewing them firsthand in real life settings. In fact, we’ve spent over seven years testing diaper bags for every preference — from spacious totes that carry everything you need to lightweight backpacks that let you go hands-free to stylish leather bags that don’t even look like they’re carrying baby gear.

We’ve reviewed classic styles that have stood the test of time to newer, trendy models with unique features. While picking our favorites, we consider things like comfort of carrying, ease of packing/spaciousness, ease of access to zippered sections and compartments, material quality and more. We also evaluate each bag on durability, style, price, whether it can attach to a stroller, whether it includes useful add-ons like a changing pad and any other notable benefits like insulated pouches. We based our recommendations on extensive research of the market, assessing brands and materials, reviewing styles in real life and testing in-Lab and with consumer testers.

What to look for in a diaper bag

line break

Before you start shopping for the next bag to hold all of your baby's essentials, here are a few things to consider when picking the right one for you and your family:

✔️ Interior space: Don't be fooled by appearances; what matters most is what's on the inside. (Yes, we're still talking about diaper bags.) Bags that don't look huge can still be surprisingly roomy once you open them, and bags that do look big don't necessarily have a lot of packing space. If you want a diaper bag that can hold diaper changing supplies, clothes, blankets, bottles and more, make sure you look at the inside compartments.

✔️ Organizational pockets: Most diaper bags have large elastic pouches to hold diapers and bulky items along with smaller zippered compartments so you don't lose the little things. Some even have bottle and wipe holders for easy access. You can also find bags that come with extra pouches in addition to the built-in pockets.

✔️ Stroller hooks: Unlike regular styles, diaper bags often have discreet rings or straps that you can attach onto the stroller's handlebar and be bag-free while you walk. Some bags can be clipped on directly, but oftentimes you need to add hooks onto the stroller separately. Just be cautious of how heavy the bag is to prevent the stroller from tipping over.

✔️ Strap comfort: If you're worried about holding a heavy bag for a long period of time, look for straps that are wide and padded to help offload the weight. You can also look for adjustable straps to help find the right fit.

✔️ Accessories: The majority of diaper bags come with a changing pad so you don't have to purchase your own, but the size and thickness of the pads will vary. Some also come with extra containers, straps and more add-ons for a better value. Others, especially the ones that are lower priced, may be sold as the bag alone, so don't always assume you're getting the changing pad.

✔️ Style: Don't forget to make sure to pick a bag you'll actually enjoy wearing. There are tons of options to choose from and you certainly don't have to sacrifice fashion for function. Also consider who will be using it; many styles are unisex so all parents and caregivers can share the same bag.

Do you really need a diaper bag?

linebreak

Yes. Even if you decide to skip buying a diaper-specific bag, you still need a spacious carryall for when you leave home with a baby. If you prefer to repurpose a bag you already own, it helps to use packing pouches or an organizing bag insert so you aren't scrambling to find the essentials in your bag. Otherwise, it's certainly worth investing in a new diaper bag because they're designed specifically to use with infants and toddlers.

What's the best type of diaper bag?

linebreak

Depending on your little one, your family's lifestyle and your personal needs, you may find a specific type of diaper bag is more convenient than others. Some types to pick from are:

✔️ Backpacks: Your best bet if you want to be hands-free, diaper backpacks are popular because they're comfortable to wear on long outings and stay put as you move. Unlike backpacks you'd carry for travel or work, these look like diaper bags on the inside with baby-friendly organizational compartments.

✔️ Totes: With two long straps to wear over your shoulder, these are convenient if you need to reach inside for something while you're carrying it. They also tend to be even more spacious than diaper backpacks and have bigger compartments, making them ideal for younger babies that need more items when you're out.

✔️ Messenger or crossbody bags: Similar to totes, these bags are roomy and easy to access. The difference is that they have one long strap and hang lower, so they may be more comfortable to wear if the bag feels bulky under your shoulder or if your arms are occupied with a baby. You'll often find removable long straps that come with tote diaper bags so you can also wear them across your body.

✔️ Convertible bags: As the name suggests, these diaper bags can switch from one of the above styles to another, and sometimes even can be worn all three ways. Depending on the shape there may be one ideal way to wear it — i.e. if it's taller it's best as a backpack, but if it's wider it's best as a tote or messenger — but removable and adjustable straps let you choose how to carry it an any given time.

✔️ Clutches: If you don't need to carry as much in your bag, clutches hold just the basics you need for diaper changes. They're also ideal for holding the essentials together so you can toss it into larger bags when it's time to head out.
