Caragh Thuring builds covert narratives through traces of images and fragmented painted gestures. Depicted spaces suggest and mark human presence, prying behind accepted structures to create speculative environments. For her exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery, Thuring presents a new series of paintings, including portraits and figures.
Economically rendered through motifs appropriated from built environments, each painting is a sum of its parts rather than a unified surface.This series continues Thuring’s interest in fleeting and speedy consumption, and therefore how little information is required to convey an image, interrupting and slowing the process of recognition.
Caragh Thuring (born 1972, Brussels), lives and works in London. Recent solo exhibitions include Anthony Meier, San Francisco (2013); Simon Preston Gallery, New York (2011); and Thomas Dane Gallery, London (2010). Group exhibitions include Performer As Curator, The Lowry, Manchester (2013); The First Rebellion is History, Next Week
Rome Falls, Simon Preston Gallery, New York; Troubling Space, Zabludowicz Collection, London (both 2012) and Newspeak: British Art Now, Saatchi Gallery, London (2010).
