Our Winemaking Philosophy

Our wines and ciders reflect the liquid landscape of Northern Michigan.

Our winemaking starts in the vineyard and our philosophy in the cellar is to let the fruit shine, adding or taking away as little as possible on its journey to your glass.

We approach our winemaking with curiosity and don’t subscribe to a specific winemaking style, instead letting the fruit guide our decisions in the cellar from season to season. While we don’t shy away from using cultivated yeasts to initiate some fermentations, we are equally excited to produce wild-fermented wines and ciders from organically farmed fruit from our home farm.

We aspire to create aromatic, easy drinking wines that are true to this place that we love and every growing season we experience in the field. We hope that when you drink a Folklor wine or cider, you’re reminded of swims in Lake Michigan, blustery winter hikes and the legacy of glaciers that formed this magical place.

Prior to building our winery, we produced wines and ciders with our custom crush partner, Petoskey Farms Vineyard & Winery for the 2020 - 2023 vintages. Being able to work with a partner winery made it financially viable for us to pursue starting our own winery and building our own cellar. We are grateful to Andy and Tracie Roush and the entire Petoskey Farms team for their years of support and encouragement.
