The Fighter

Whoa! After watching this new spot, I'm pretty damn sure Christian Bale is going to win Best Supporting Actor next year for this. During tonight's season finale of AMC's "Mad Men" (which everyone in the industry watches), Paramount aired this fantastic new two-minute TV trailer for David O. Russell's The Fighter, the new boxing drama out in December starring Bale and Mark Wahlberg, as well as Amy Adams and Melissa Leo. The embed is from Deadline, who exclusively debuted this awards-focused spot online. In comparison to the first official trailer, which I already thought looked incredible, this makes it look even better. Enjoy!

A look at the early years of boxer 'Irish' Micky Ward and his brother who helped train him in the mid-80s.

The Fighter is directed by David O. Russell, of Spanking the Monkey, Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees as well as the never-released project Nailed previously. Russell took over the project after Darren Aronofsky dropped out a few years ago. The script was co-written by Paul Tamasy (Air Bud, Walking Across Egypt) and first-timer Eric Johnson with Scott Silver (Johns, The Mod Squad, 8 Mile). Paramount is bringing The Fighter to limited theaters starting on December 10th with an expansion the following week.

They should really have awards for movie trailers. Also: Mad Men is lame. Boardwalk Empire is the promised land.

"Air Bud" was a terribly unappreciated work of cinema that begs for further consideration from any serious cinephile. Truly, the genius behind that movie can only ensure box office magic with this flick.

Bale looks almost as nasty as he did in The Machinist... that dude knows how to manipulate his weight!

I was more impressed in Bale's performance over the rest of the movie. The guy hasn't been given his acting props if you ask me.

I called it a long long time ago in one of these posts, when there was first talk of this film that Bale would win an Oscar for the role of Dickie! Nice to see that I was way ahead of everybody... ha ha!

Love Bale in every thing he's done that I've seen. Wahlberg is good, but he's a hit or miss for me . This looks really good so I'll definetly see this. I hope this is as good as it seems.

Bale seriously deserves an oscar...he kinda sux how he is only known worldwide mainly for the batman movies and not his great performances in the machinist, 3:10 to yuma, and american psycho, the prestige and rescue dawn. Seriously the guy is a beat and the most underated actor in the business.

@12 - I was completely thinking the same thing. I got to see The Machinist for the first time a little while ago, such a good movie, and it freaked me out in the first part seeing his body. I'd say Bale is about 2/3 the way to that (at least in the photo, not as bad looking in the trailer). I'm sure most studios refuse to let an actor go that far again, but I think Bale decides a lot of it for himself. My friend and I think he's a little extreme and fear for the level of hate his body must have for him, but an amazing actor none-the-less. Someone brought up this movie to me when Bale got brought up. I'd love to see it now. I usually feel bad for other actors when one actor steals the show or gets a lot of pre-release buzz already (which makes viewers watch for them even more), but by the looks of it the whole cast might hold their own and Bale is just the stand-out. I'd also like to see Wahlberg make more strong role choices like this one. Anyone else notice that movies dealing with professional fighters get a lot of Oscar recognition? I think it's the cross between action and drama. I hope it doesn't become the new go-to for an Oscar nom though.
