Description:

Rare!! Late Ptolemaic Period Ancient Egyptian Cartonnage Mummy Burial Mask. Constructed of Cartonnage which is a type of material used in ancient Egyptian funerary masks from the First Intermediate Period to the Roman era. It was made of layers of linen or papyrus covered with plaster. Similar to papier-maché, cartonnage can be molded in three dimensions, so the masks could be carefully worked to closely resemble the bodies inside them. Cartonnage is also easily painted, so the face and wig of the mummy could be reproduced to help make it look just like the person that was inside. This would help the person's spirits to recognize and return to the body. This particular mask is believed to be from the Ptolemaic Period- 1st Century BC. Features a polychrome gesso, large black eyes and red mouth. This mummy head case features linen strips & papyrus mache with polychrome painting, predominantly blue/red line, black geometric patterns in the front panel. Mounted on a wood block & stem. Finally detailed painting of the eyes and lips. Probably woman or a child based on the facial features and details. This piece has been stabilized with epoxy. Keywords: Artifact, Antique Rare; Ref: BD1495
