Look inside Google's newest Cambridge offices, part of $75M investment this year

Google plans to invest more than $75 million in the Bay State by the end of the calendar year, expanding its Kendall Square campus and current Massachusetts workforce of 2,100 as well as funding local nonprofits, partnerships and professional development initiatives.

The tech giant (Nasdaq: GOOG) made the announcement on Wednesday at its 150 Broadway office in Cambridge, where the company recently completed construction on eight floors spanning 170,000 square feet.

Areas of the renovated space, including the office's game room, a few collaboration spaces and the "Bazaar Cafe" for employees, were also revealed to the public.

Rich Miner, Google's site lead in Cambridge, said that the investment includes the build-out of Google's "long-term campus presence" in Cambridge. Another building at 325 Main St. is slated to be finished at the end of this year, where Google will be occupying 14 floors totaling 380,000 square feet.

"Our presence here is growing," Miner said. "We're continuing to hire hundreds."

Miner, a co-founder of Android who's been living in Cambridge for over 30 years, said that Google continues to hire engineers, product people, salespeople, go-to-marker and support folks.

Google also built out 40,000 square feet of extra space last year at its 355 Main St. and 90 Broadway buildings. Upon completion of its latest site, Google — which had presence in the Bay State for over 15 years — says its total office footprint in Cambridge will span more than 1 million square feet.

The space of 150 Broadway is home to about 800 workers and Google's global business organization, including the advertising, YouTube, Chrome and search teams. Across the entire campus, where over 30 teams are represented, there's also a large Google travel team working on hotels and flights products.

"We've been seeing upwards of 70% of our employees returning to the office since we reopened," Jonah Berman, a site program manager, said.

Berman explained that Google reopened its offices last year on a voluntary basis, but nobody was required to come back until April 18 this year. Since that date, most employees come in three days a week. Google also offers a remote work option for many employees through an an application process, he explained.

"We do our best to accommodate people's needs so they can do their best work," Berman said.

In remarks at the event, Congresswoman Katherine Clark said that Google has been a critical component of Massachusetts's thriving innovation economy. Earlier this week, Google for Startups and Boston's Visible Hands announced a partnership to run a virtual, 20-week fellowship program to support early-stage Latinx founders.
