Figs

Figs

Figs, from the genus Ficus, are a type of fruit that grow on deciduous trees in temperate and subtropical climates. The most common species of fig for consumption is Ficus carica. Figs are unique fruits that develop inside a hollow, pear-shaped syconium, which contains multiple tiny flowers. This structure ripens to produce the fig fruit.

The fruit can vary in color from green to brown, purple, or even black, depending on the variety. The inside of a ripe fig is filled with tiny, crunchy seeds embedded in a sweet, moist flesh that ranges in color from white to red. The texture is often described as syrupy or jammy, and the flavor is sweet and mildly earthy.

Fig trees can grow up to 30 feet (9 meters) tall and have large, lobed leaves. They thrive in well-draining soil and full sun. Figs are typically harvested in late summer and fall.
