James Marshall Hendrix (né Johnny Allen Hendrix; le 27 nov. 1942, mort le 18 sept. 1970) était un guitariste, chanteur et compositeur américain. Bien que sa carrière n'ait duré que quatre ans, il est largement considéré comme l'un des guitaristes électriques les plus influents de l'histoire de la musique populaire et l'un des musiciens les plus célèbres du XXe siècle. Le Temple de la renommée du rock and roll le décrit comme "sans doute le plus grand instrumentiste de l'histoire de la musique rock".
Hendrix avait la particularité, pour un guitariste gaucher, de jouer le plus souvent sur une guitare droitière, après avoir levé les cordes après cette inversion. Cependant, il empruntait parfois une guitare à un droitier et jouait avec les cordes comme elles étaient.
