This stuff works to keep away weeds and SLUGS!

This stuff works to keep away weeds and SLUGS!
Update: This mulch has been covering the area I photographed when I first put it down. It is now 2017 and it's still there, with the same results!I have edited my previous not so nice review because I discovered some things that are great with this mulch - First of all, while it is bulky, wherever I put it last year, there are no weeds this year. Secondly, I put it in a shade raised garden under a maple tree last year where I have 2 huge hosta growing. Well, much to my surprise and delight, when I went to add more of this 'miracle' mulch (the second of two I had ordered), there were NO SLUGS!!!!!!! NONE!!!! NA-DA!!!!! Before I put this stuff down, I had to use lots of Sluggo to keep them off my hosta. I am ordering more of this for another shady spot I have with hosta (and weeds). I'm sure this will take care of both the slugs and the weeds. While I can't say I will use this stuff in my other gardens as it is rather bulky and not 'pretty' (I use natural cedar mulch for them), I would definitely recommend it to anyone fighting slugs and weeds where hosta are growing.

Been many years since I have last bought this product from Amazon but was looking to get more and compare prices and decided to leave a review. Over the years I have mainly used this product as an alternative to perlite, it provides my soil mixes with an aggregate which does not float to the top. It does eventually break down but usually makes it to 24-30 months in a microbe rich environment when mixed into the soil. It provides excellent drainage while at the same time also helping with water retention which makes over watering an almost impossible task. Generally overwatering is something that can be controlled by modifying behavior with the caveat of living in the PNW where there is times of the year is is straight rain and this is where this product shine. Other options such as fine lava rock work for the drainage aspect but become a hindrance if there is dry period during summer and it increases your water use. Others such as perlite slowly work themselves up to the top of containers because they float and slowly decreasing drainage over time. I generally use 10-15% by volume initially with about a 5-10% add back between seasons as a add back when recycling container soil. This product does contain more salts then some of the higher end coir but they can be flushed out with a few washes, using HOT water helps greatly with the flushes. As a disclosure though I will only buy it when it is around $10-$12 a block and it has had as massive price increase on amazon the last few years, I have about 35-40 yards of container soil and it starts to become cost prohibitive to alternatives. That being said, if you working with smaller volumes this product can be highly useful in rainy environments. It is also a good idea to add a little extra lime in rainy environments for things like tomatoes otherwise blossom end rot can become an issue.

I bought PlantBest mulch last year and then this year again. I have a tub (I use a small child's swim pool) to put the mulch in and then add water. Then it's so easy to spread the wet mulch in the garden. I never have to water or weed, because the mulch does such a fine job holding moisture and keeping the weeds from sprouting through. I'm buying this again next year. (P.S.- My garden is small - about 4' x 6'. This completely covers everything.)

Great product - I've been using it with much success for years. My only issue is the expense. Regarding the one poster who said it was a breeding ground for termites - wrong! Read this report ... it actually finds this type of mulch to be best to avoid termites.[...]

Also, the quickest way that I have found to get this ready to spread is to 1) put in a small rubber garbage can 2) use a small square-ish shovel (I use a trenching shovel because it's what I have) to split the bail, from the narrow side, into about 6 separate layers and then 3) fill the garbage can with lots of water (4-5 gallons I would guess) and then 4) break up the soaking mulch with the shovel (up and down and mix motions). It takes me about 5 minutes to get one bale ready to go.

It takes a lot to cover ground in my flower bed. I had to buy four of these. Ordered two from Costco which were twenty dollars cheaper, tried to order more but they were out and had to order from Amazon. I will not buy from Amazon again.

I thought this was going to be the answer to my mulching needs. I am a container gardener because I don't have much space in my yard, so I don't have need of bales and bales of straw, and I somehow completely forgot about my past answer - good ol' soil pep.

It arrived quickly and I had no difficulty opening it. This was very easy for me to prepare. I put it in a large tote, soaked it, and within minutes I could start breaking off chunks to spread around, but I left it over night for good measure.

The next day I was able to easily spread the very soggy stuff where I needed it, in between containers, around a bush hither and yon. Even though it was wet I was sure to "water it in" as one should do with any mulch (I live in an extremely arid place). It looked so pretty there between my pots of broccoli! So, I kept going, thinking I'd found my answer. And then that night the wind came. I wasn't too worried about the mulch though, because I'd read from other reviewers that this coconut coir mulch would somehow stay "clicked" together to withstand winds. Oi vey. Not in my case.

Much to my dismay, when I checked things out the following morning, I found I had coconut coir mulch all over my yard! IN my grass too, where it was difficult to remove. Luckily, it decomposes quickly, so I put all of it in my compost pile, and now when I turn my compost I can't see it at all as it's already broken down. That was fast! Now that's a great feature! In fact, if I could get 10 cubic yards of it for the same price as the sawdust I can get from the lumber yard I'd use this coconut coir in my compost bin regularly.

I don't know how it sticks or clicks together for other people, and if you were one of those who could make it work 👏. But for me it was not worth the money. I went back to the tried and true soil pep, and not even our strong winds can mess it up.
