Also, the quickest way that I have found to get this ready to spread is to 1) put in a small rubber garbage can 2) use a small square-ish shovel (I use a trenching shovel because it's what I have) to split the bail, from the narrow side, into about 6 separate layers and then 3) fill the garbage can with lots of water (4-5 gallons I would guess) and then 4) break up the soaking mulch with the shovel (up and down and mix motions). It takes me about 5 minutes to get one bale ready to go.
I have edited my previous not so nice review because I discovered some things that are great with this mulch - First of all, while it is bulky, wherever I put it last year, there are no weeds this year. Secondly, I put it in a shade raised garden under a maple tree last year where I have 2 huge hosta growing. Well, much to my surprise and delight, when I went to add more of this 'miracle' mulch (the second of two I had ordered), there were NO SLUGS!!!!!!! NONE!!!! NA-DA!!!!! Before I put this stuff down, I had to use lots of Sluggo to keep them off my hosta. I am ordering more of this for another shady spot I have with hosta (and weeds). I'm sure this will take care of both the slugs and the weeds. While I can't say I will use this stuff in my other gardens as it is rather bulky and not 'pretty' (I use natural cedar mulch for them), I would definitely recommend it to anyone fighting slugs and weeds where hosta are growing.

It arrived quickly and I had no difficulty opening it. This was very easy for me to prepare. I put it in a large tote, soaked it, and within minutes I could start breaking off chunks to spread around, but I left it over night for good measure.
The next day I was able to easily spread the very soggy stuff where I needed it, in between containers, around a bush hither and yon. Even though it was wet I was sure to "water it in" as one should do with any mulch (I live in an extremely arid place). It looked so pretty there between my pots of broccoli! So, I kept going, thinking I'd found my answer. And then that night the wind came. I wasn't too worried about the mulch though, because I'd read from other reviewers that this coconut coir mulch would somehow stay "clicked" together to withstand winds. Oi vey. Not in my case.
Much to my dismay, when I checked things out the following morning, I found I had coconut coir mulch all over my yard! IN my grass too, where it was difficult to remove. Luckily, it decomposes quickly, so I put all of it in my compost pile, and now when I turn my compost I can't see it at all as it's already broken down. That was fast! Now that's a great feature! In fact, if I could get 10 cubic yards of it for the same price as the sawdust I can get from the lumber yard I'd use this coconut coir in my compost bin regularly.
I don't know how it sticks or clicks together for other people, and if you were one of those who could make it work 👏. But for me it was not worth the money. I went back to the tried and true soil pep, and not even our strong winds can mess it up.
