For starters, I’m a huge Lamy fan. I have about 7 of their fountain pens with varying nibs. Love the feel and ease with which I can write. German made….need I say more?

When I purchase any Lamy via Amazon, I find the photos don’t match the actual shade. That’s the case with this one. It’s much more beautiful in person. I’ve had the opposite happen as well - looks amazing in the photo but then it arrives and meh.🫤

I love fountain pens. I own a couple of nice pens, but wanted a solid performing desk pen for my office that I could use for hand writing thank you's and such, but one that I could comfortably leave laying around on my desk & carry with me as I travel - meaning I might eventually lose it. I'm unwilling to do this with my Montblanc pen (it was a gift) for obvious reasons. I don't have a lot of money, so this was a splurge purchase for me with some Christmas money I was given. And I have been completely satisfied with the pen. The blue is truly beautifully applied to the aluminum. The pen is a bit lighter than I'd prefer, but that comes as no surprise since it is again, aluminum. It is well constructed in fit and finish.

I chose the Extra-fine Nib because I really do prefer a thin line of ink. This borders on too thin, which is in no way a complaint. I was surprised to find it lays down a line narrower than my TUL 0.5 Mm Needle Point pens do. Impressive from a non-art focused fountain pen. The stores I tried this pen in only had Fine tips, and I'm still undecided whether I would still like to add a second Nib to my collection for variety. But for now I'm enjoy the very narrow beads of blue this pen exudes when I press it to paper.

Having gone through a handful of refills on the pen, I can comfortably say it has written flawlessly. I write with it 5 days a week, though not a lot of writing, and the nib remains dry yet ready to write at any point. No collection of ink run down, no dried on ink clogging the flow. Haven't had to break it loose with some water or rubbing alcohol yet, and I've been using it for a good while now.

I did also purchase the Lamy Safari Converter which is in my opinion a must have piece. Honestly it is disappointing that Lamy doesn't just package it with the pen and charge a few bucks more. I did purchase the Lamy Bottle Ink (Blue Black) ink, which was a mistake on my part. What I apparently wanted was Lamy Bottle Ink Turquoise that I had sampled in the store. The Turquoise is a vibrant blue whereas the Blue-black is nearly Navy blue in color. That doesn't mean the Blue-black is bad, just not what I had in mind. Since I now have 50ml of it, I'm sure I'll get used to it.

The boxing the pen ships in nicely protect the pen from any normal transportation wear.

In short the pen is functional and beautiful while remaining simple to operate. Most of the best things in life can be described as such.

I have been using Lamy Safari pens since 2011 and this is my third. My first pen was destroyed in an accident, and I'm still using the second, just wanted to add to my collection. I originally bought this pen in 2011 because it was the cheapest fountain pen I could find, and I see that it is still one of the recommended pens for newbies to the fountain pen world. I do not recommend it and here's why: the Pilot Metropolitan has a better lid, comes with a converter, and costs less. That's a pretty hard combo to beat! The Metropolitan seems to also write slightly better. The only thing Lamy does better is the grip-- it's much more ergonomic. That's why I bought this one, for the grip. I also thought that my lid problems with the old pen were because it's old and been through a lot, so a new pen would have a better lid. Nope, that's just the way they are. I just forgot/have been spoiled by my Metropolitan.

I bought this pen about 7 months ago, and it works perfectly for me: The blue color is exactly my favorite shade, the contour of the grip is great, it writes smoothly, and the weight of it is relatively light for it being mostly metal. For me, this pen has become an everyday carry pen.
About two-and-a-half weeks ago though, I lost mine. Having checked all my usual spots, I realized the one place I hadn't checked was the site of a small picnic I had been on beside a local through-town trail. I went back there, and with the grass there being relatively recently cut, I was expecting to find the pen in multiple pieces, especially with a couple of the larger plastic components. Imagine my surprise when I find it in just two: The cap and the pen itself! Other than a few fresh scuffs on the ends, the finish remained basically perfect all along the barrel and the cap. And with just light cleaning and a fresh ink cartridge, it's functioning just as good as new.
Granted, I got lucky. I do not recommend leaving a pen like this out in the open for that long, likely letting it be run over by a lawnmower, and having the cartridge dry out. Your mileage, after all, may vary.
For someone who just likes using a fountain pen on a more casual basis, Lamy's pens are perfect. And for someone who prefers a more substantive weight to their pen (or is prone to accidentally losing it), the cost to go up to the Al-Star line from their plastic-build Safari line is well worth it!

I like this Lamy al star. The price was decent. I like the color. The only issue I had with mine was that the fine nib was very scratchy. I have replaced it with a black medium nib, now it writes smooth as butter. I think Lamy nibs especially the fine and extra fine are hit and miss. I have a fine on one of my Safari s that started a bit scratchy but after using it for a few days has smoothed out nicely. But the fine one that came with my al star was horrible scratchy.
