"Well, the opera started, and I made it thru "Plangero" and then, when I began "Se Pieta", an absolute hush came over the audience. People were hanging on every note."
"When I finished the aria,... the curtain began coming down very slowly, and the death like silence continued--and then a roar went through the house the likes of which I'd never heard. I was a little stunned by it. The audience wouldn't stop applauding." "I didnt come out for a bow, but the peole wouldn't leave their sets. They just sat there applauding and applauding as if it were the end of the opera."
"I had another aria to sing in Act III, and when the final curtain came down, I just knew I'd never preformed like that before."
Four days later when she checked her mail, "The five-inch box was jammed. I had invitations to sing in literally every major opera house in the world-- except the Met. That's when the craziness of my career began."
BEVERLY AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY
High end recordings of Sills in her earlier years are far and few between, so this is truly a gem. I believe this was recorded in 1967, when Sills was absolutely in her prime. No question. Her V'adoro, pupille, Piangero and Da Tempeste are PHENOMENAL. Piangero is loaded with classic trills that she is so commonly associated with, and which many traditionalist would have most issue with. This Giulio Ceasare version is clearly not a traditional interpretation of Handel, but Sills' bel canto ornaments really bring the music to life. Treigle and Sills have wonderful chemistry. To have only seen this live at the NYCO!
"Se pieta" is filled with beautiful interpretation and emotion.
Never to date have I heard a better "Da Tempeste."
Beverly Sills' delivery of Handel's Cleopatra seems almost superhuman in her vocal abilities. The misplacement of 'Piangero la sorte mia' (it belongs in the 2nd act and dramatically just seems weirdly incongruous where this production features it, in the 1st act before Cleopatra has revealed her identity) doesn't mar the impeccable beauty of Sills' navigation of its complex emotion, and the ornamentation she offers is wondrous -- very few sopranos in this role ornament to this extent, but it works incredibly well with her voice and her characterization.
The recording sounds odd on my somewhat limited sound system. I wonder if on a serious stereo set-up if it would work better. At times characters sound like they are far away, other times they sound as if they are up against the microphone. Perhaps it was recording as if it were being staged at the same time.
I'll be honest: I do not care for Norman Treigle as Caeser. The role originally was written for the castrato Senesino by Handel, and though Treigle's voice is powerful and virile and in almost every way the epitome of the perfect operatic bass, dramatically and melodically this role just doesn't sound "right" to me sung in that octave. Today we don't allow the creation of castrati, but as a countertenor myself, I much, much prefer a countertenor in this role. The German Andreas Scholl or the American David Daniels especially (he could certainly match Ms. Sills in her prime) come to mind -- clips of each singing arias from this opera can be found online.
All in all -- buy this cd not because of its historical accuracy or its faithfulness to Handel's original or because it's period authenticity. It is none of these. Buy it because it's Beverly Sills at her finest, singing precisely the sort of repertoire she "should" have always sung. She is a wonder throughout this recording.
Calling this lovely version of the opera "ear candy" is trite, however accurate it may be; but Rudel's interpretation of the great composer is first-rate. A must for all who love Handel!
