Greetings and congratulations on the purchase of your Ukulele.
Now that you have acquainted yourself with the instrument, the first thing we want to do is tune it up.
It is simple as 1 – 2 – 3!
|
|
|
---|---|---|
Step 1: Tune your ukuleleTo aide in tuning process, we recommend using a Golden Gate PT-1 Posi-Tune Compact Tuner or similar. Begin by bringing each string as close to pitch as possible. The notes we will be tuning each string to, starting from Top to Bottom are: G – C – E – A |
Step 2: Stretch each stringIn order to your ukulele in tune, it will be necessary to stretch each string until it stabilizes. This is due to the material that typical ukulele strings are manufactured from and is perfectly normal. Once each string is tuned up close to pitch – firmly, but gently – pull along the entire length on each string (while carefully supporting the instrument.) Pay particular attention to where each string wraps around the tuning peg posts, as well as where they are knotted at the bridge. It is normal for ukulele strings to stretch considerably, so be patient. Also, be careful not to pull too hard on each string while stretching to avoid damaging the strings or your instrument. |
Step 3: Repeat Previous Steps and Tune it againYou are almost there; just repeat the process of tuning and stretching until each string stabilizes to the correct note. You’ve probably noticed that after having repeated the process several times, your ukulele will hold its tune better and better. Depending on how often you play your ukulele, it could take a few days – even up to a few weeks for your strings to settle in – but once that happens you will be ready to play at all times! |

Sound & Strings: Fine for a beginner like me...
Some people complained that the strings that come on the Uke need to be replaced asap. I honestly don't mind them. I bought a Snark SN-6 Ukulele Tuner to go with my Uke and that suits me just fine. I don't mind re-tuning. It gives me practice and helps my ear learn what to listen for. I bought some additional strings, but if figured I'd bang up the stock strings first. Although a more experience person can probably tell that Uke could sound better with better strings, I'm happy enough for now. I'm just excited that I can hear the chords match the ones from my favorite songs and YouTube tutorials.
Body & Paint: I like it...
It's little but strong. It's the size of a toy, but feels well made. The paint job is not as poorly done as expected. Some other reviews complained about the paint. I think it's properly coated and has a nice gloss. I like the Black Uke that I bought, but after watching a few videos, I kind of wish I would had gone with a more traditional wood look. That being said, the black looks really good.
Tuner & Saddle: I don't know enough about Ukuleles to have a conclusion
The tuner seems to be fine. I'm able to get my Uke in tune, but sometimes I feel that when I turn the Tuners they don't always respond. I'm not blaming the tuner just yet, I'm assuming it's the strings for now. I'll try to update this when I come to a conclusion. As for saddle, I think it's fine, but the verdict is not in yet. I'm only mentioning this because I keep snagging myself as I learn to strum. Some people have mentioned that the saddle should be filed down to adjust the action. Either way, I'm not sure if it's the Uke or me. So I'll just say it's me for now.
All of that being said, so far so good. The Mahalo U-30Bk is priced great for a solid little product, especially if you are exploring a new hobby and don't want to spend.
UPDATE 10/7/13: I wanted to update my review by saying I am still using the lovely little ukulele! It's got some nicks and scratches and does need to be re-tuned if I don't pick it up and play it for a few days or longer at a time, but it still works really well... ESPECIALLY for how much I paid for it.
For starters, I paid $20 for this uke - a steal. Yeah, the construction is simple (it's a $20 ukulele, that's no shocker) and the sound was crap, but after restringing the instrument with some Aquila Nylgut strings, it sounds great. The action is good, it stays in tune (geared, dolphin-shaped tuners work great), and has a light, plucky sound that's easy to fall in love with. The paint finish was smooth and free of blemishes, and I tweaked the appearance of mine by adding a few personalized, white decals (Arrgh!)
This is one of those ukes that everyone should own, as they're a lot of fun to play, they're easy (and fun) to customize, and they're extremely affordable. This would be great for children, music students, beginners looking at trying out a new instrument, or for any ukulele enthusiast out there looking to pick up a beach/camping/work uke on the go (if it gets damaged, it's a whopping $20 to replace).
One drawback - the bag it comes with, as someone mentioned already, is complete crap. It's little more than a grocery bag, so if you're looking at taking this thing around places, I'd definitely spend the $10 or $20 and purchase a soprano-sized gig bag (I bought a Lanikai one here on Amazon for $12 over the summer, and it's awesome). That's my only complaint, and the only reason I'm giving this 4 out of 5 stars is because one would have to purchase a set of nicer strings ($6 - $9) in order for this instrument to sound decent.

Actually, I bought it as the birthday gift from my mom to me. :D When it came, I had to try it before I gave it to her to wrap. (Of course it had to be wrapped even though I knew what it was! I like opening things.) I tuned it up, and just like other reviewers have said, it went out of tune pretty quickly. It had to be tuned every few minutes. I wasn't worried, though. Some wonderful reviewers who know their stuff said the strings would be like that at first, then keep their tuning after a week or so. From day to day a string or two will need a tweak, and that's all. After having mine for a few weeks, I can tell you one thing for sure - everyone loves ukuleles. Everyone wants to try it, and no one has complained about it in any way. I've decided it'll be fun to learn ukulele. :D
*edit* Update: I bought this ukulele in 2016 to learn on, it is now January 2018, and it has served me well. It has traveled and been knocked around and played by children and toddlers (and everyone), and aside from a ding to the paint on a top corner, it's lasted very well. It's a solid little beauty, and more than ever before I can definitely recommend this for anyone wanting to learn. I'm currently waiting for a new ukulele to come in the mail - a tenor! I'm so excited!
*UPDATE!* 4 years later.... It is now 2020 and I own 6 ukuleles. Having played a variety of sizes and styles and different price points, I can tell you from a more experienced position that this is a good beginner ukulele. The build is solid and the sound quality is great for the price. It's a ukulele that won't make you regret it if you don't want to learn it in the end, and will be a faithful companion if you decide to join the world of ukulele. :)
Pros:
- Visually appealing. I went with the black model, but they all look pretty good.
- Great sound for its price.
- No issues with the construction. Neck was straight, as were the fret boards, and no complaints about the tuning pegs.
- Decent quality nylon strings. Certainly much better quality than I expected from something so cheap.
Cons:
- The carrying case is super lightweight -- no padding at all. It'll offer absolutely no protection.
- Material is a bit on the cheaper side (fret board is plastic, not wire). I don't think it'd survive much abuse. Mine also came with a (barely noticeable) dent on the back.
- Paint has started to chip off on the neck after a few months of use.
As others have mentioned, this will need to be tuned often during the first few weeks. Definitely invest in a tuner -- I was trying to tune it to a piano, but just got fed up having to do it so often. Bought a tuner and had the whole thing tuned up in under 2 minutes.
Overall, a great ukulele for the price. The light weight (and cost) also makes it great for children as well as anyone just interested in learning the instrument.
Tiene un sonido muy bueno, aunque al inicio me costó poder afinarlo.
Cambie las cuerdas y el sonido mejoro mucho.
Adquirí el color negro, en el precio de $817
Muy bonito Ukulele.
