Great shredder, but it has some shortcomings.
UPDATED - I figured out the suction feature on the shredder! Maybe it was in the manual and I missed it or it wasn't described correctly, but in any case - here you go.**With the base on the countertop, attach the top and turn to connect. When you turn to connect the top and the bottom, the suction engages and secures it to the countertop. Once I figured that out...this shredder didn't move a inch. It was so secure that I let my 5 year old shred a few blocks of cheese. I also moved the shredder to the edge of the countertop, so the handle is off the edge and viola...no issues banging your fingers when you turn the crank. With all that being said...I'm bumping up my rating to a full 5 stars as I will most likely not buy pre-shredded cheese again!The G.CHEN Rotary Cheese Grater Shredder is a great addition to the kitchen, but falls short in a few areas.Let's start with what I liked:This is not a small unit, which surprised me when taking it out of the box. This is a great benefit, in that you don't have to cut up your shredding items a lot before you get to shredding. Assembling the shredder was relatively easy without any instructions, but I did have one issue that I'll describe below. I shredded a block of Asiago cheese and it turned out perfectly. Turning the handle on the unit is smooth, but I had one issue which I will describe below. Cleanup was a breeze too: disassemble and toss into the dishwasher! Even though the unit is dishwasher safe, I will most likely handwash the unit, since dishwasher detergents can be abrasive.Now on to what I didn't like:There is NO suction on this unit. The base has a rubber ring, but it does not suction to the counter. The instructions detail wiping off the rubber ring and that amounts to making it secure to the countertop, but it doesn't work. The unit slid around on the counter when turning the crank. In addition, the crank is long and doesn't allow for much clearance between your hand and the countertop during cranking. Anyone with larger hands may hit the counter with each turn and situating the handle off the counter is not feasible, since the chute is not long enough – risking spilling your shreds on the floor. Disassembly of the shredder was difficult: twisting the base from the shredder housing. I solved this by holding the base in a headlock and twisting off the housing. Probably not the best, but it solved the problem.Overall Impression: Decent shredder, but may be challenging for some users.
