Gorgeous picture. Pristine 1080p and stunning 4k! (Rating change; see updates)
I upgraded from a 5030UB to the 5040UB. The 5030UB is great but lacks, of course, 4k enhancement. I have it mounted from the ceiling so the larger size is not an issue for me. It is 17' from my 150"; screen and I sit 15' from the screen. My theater is completely light-controlled with no windows. I have Dish and a PS3 for streaming. Currently, my only 4k source is 4k recordings of the Rio Olympics. In many 1080i programs, I see no difference in the picture quality. Newscasts, however, are better. I don't know why the difference. On most Blu-rays, I see little to no difference. The 5030UB and the 5040UB are both pristine in 1080p. In some, The Pacific, for example, the picture quality is somewhat better on the 5040UB. I don't know why the difference.Turning to my only source for 4k (currently), I was immediately stunned and elated by the picture quality! I have basketball, track and field, and swimming recorded from the Rio Olympics on Dish's 4k channel. The picture is stunningly clear! Bright, clear, and colors pop. I am eagerly awaiting the release of the Panasonic DMP-UB700 and Oppo UDP-203 UHD players. Based on the Olympic recordings, 4k discs should look astounding. I cannot currently test the HDR capability. The 5040UB has other improvements over the 5030UB, including remote-controlled lens control (far superior to the manual controls on the 5030UB) and slightly more light output at 2500 lumens. This is so bright that I can run in ECO mode and it is still plenty bright (though in a completely darkened room).Unfortunately, at 34 hours, the lamp refused to turn on. However, Epson's warranty is fantastic as after just a 10-minute phone call, Epson had a brand new unit in my hands the next day at no cost to me.I will update this review after I test it with a 4k disc. In the meantime, I've included several photos. The Oblivion shots are on Dish 1080i. The Olympics shots are in Dish 4k.UPDATE 12/16: I swapped my PS3 for a new Roku 4k and the Oppo UDP-203. UHD image quality very much depends on the source. At best, the picture quality of my 5040UB, on my 150'; screen, makes it look like a clear window that I can step through, including on Dish 4k or even UHD nature YouTube videos. There is a noticeable improvement in resolution (or perceived resolution) between 1080p and UHD, but the bigger difference is between SDR and HDR. Colors in HDR are much more vibrant, though to offset the darker image in HDR mode I have to change to Cinema Bright mode, and I often choose to switch from HDR2 to HDR1 mode. UHD movies look great but so far it seems most discs are upconverted from a 2k intermediary so the resolution improvement is modest, However, the improvement from SDR to HDR is significant.UPDATE 4/18: At about 1,479 hours, the projector suddenly failed to illuminate. No warnings. No degradation in picture quality or brightness. I got the flashing light code indicating lamp failure. Epson sent me a new lamp free of charge and all was well again. Nevertheless, the lamp's estimated life of 5,000 hours in ECO mode was more than triple the actual life of this lamp (I ran in ECO mode almost exclusively).UPDATE 2/19: After 10 months and about 700 hours on this replacement lamp, the projector again failed to illuminate suddenly. Again, no warning and no degradation in picture quality or brightness. This was the third lamp failure between two brand new units, and now I was out of warranty by more than four months. However, Epson came through again! Even though the error code indicated lamp failure, Epson sent me a refurbished unit with the understanding that I would get no warranty extension. I did not understand why they sent me another unit instead of a new lamp, but I wasn't going to argue. The refurbished unit had no signs of wear and I am sure included a new lamp.I was very aggravated that another lamp had failed very early and I had to go through the time and trouble of taking down the projector, shipping it (no charge), and mounting the replacement. I've decided to downgrade my rating from 5 to 4. Further downgrades seem too harsh as the picture is absolutely gorgeous with high quality sources (streaming 1080p or 4K, or 1080p or 4K discs), and Epson really stood behind their product. I've read reviews of newer projectors, and watched YouTube comparison reviews showing the picture difference between the 5040UB and others, including true 4K units. If I were buying today, I would buy the 5040UB again because of the outstanding picture quality, Epson's support, and the current price of just $1,999.If you are concerned that the 5040UB is faux-4K and not true 4K, don't be. Unless you are sitting within a few feet of the screen, you won't see any difference in detail. Check out the YouTube videos showing side by side comparisons. You will, however, see the exceptional color and contrast of the 5040UB is superior to anything else in it's class or in lower classes.

In spite of having to do 2 exchanges (update: 3!) for this - meaning I had to re-mount 3 projectors - I have to give this monster 5/5 stars.

    1) Epson support is amazing. It's right up there with Amazon's. They did everything they could to make sure I was happy and made it as pain free as possible to get a projector that was 100%. Lemons happen - I've done tech support in the past and know how it goes - so I am not at all holding this against the quality of the product. The last one I received was flawless. I also had issues that most people would not even notice on both accounts.

    2) Picture quality is the most amazing thing I have ever seen. I am using a Silver Ticket grey screen. My room is light-tight but my walls are not at all dark. It still looks amazing.

    3) Gaming performance is better than expected. Still doesn't look as smooth as butter, but I expected it to be a lot worse from what I read with the previous generation. I primarily use it for movies, but it works great for my console games.

    4) Bright bright bright! I wish I there was a step below Eco mode as I even find it more that bright enough at it's lowest settings. When I am doing casual watch/gaming. I have have the lights slightly dim and/or have the door open allowing hall lights in without having it completely washed out. Still obviously better to have blackout.

**Some notes or nit-picks to help others before purchasing:

    - Even with the 4K enhancement, a 4K signal is apparently down-scaled to 1080p first. This means you are not using the real pixel data when "enhancing" to look like 4K; they are doing the same algorithm to make an educated guess as to what data to use to fill in the gaps that they use for 1080p signal. You are not going to get a perfect 4K, but I hardly notice the difference anyways. The real treat with UHD is HDR and better audio, BUT...
    - HDR is pretty much not an option right now.(** See update!) Even though it was a major selling point for me, it seems like their list of supported players is extremely lacking. I use an XBox One and it does not detect that the player can handle HDR**. Epson knows about this but doesn't know when/if it will be fixed. Any settings you see suggested on the web are just mimicking the effect and not really providing the true color of HDR.
    - There is a motor involved in the 4K pixel shift or "4K enhancement", this means you might be able to hear a light hum/buz in very quiet conditions. Some people report that they cannot hear it at all.
    - The power LED is freaking bright in a dark room! I used painter's tape to cover it.

    **Update!
The Xbox One S now supports HDR with this projector! This only works for 4K Blu Ray, as far as I can tell, so no Netflix or Amazon HDR. It might work with games, but I don't have any to test. To enable this: Xbox One S settings>video output>advanced video settings>and select the item "allow YCC 4:2:2". 4K also has to be on for the blue ray I tested. Looks amazing!
    * I had a 3rd projector fail, just stopped powering on with no prior issues. Again, Epson got me a replacement in 2 days.

Like so many others who have written reviews here, our experience with Epson has been entirely miserable. Let's start with the projector itself. At first, we were very pleased. The images are (or, should I say, were) sharp with impressively vivid colors. That is, until an unmistakable purple, vertical line appeared on the screen. Fortunately, the projector was still (just barely) under warranty. UNFORTUNATELY, they insisted on replacing it with a refurbished projector rather than a new one. Naturally, I protested. After all, we didn't purchase a refurbished unit from Amazon . . . so why should we accept anything less as a warranty replacement? Sorry, Charlie. That's their "policy". Also, your warranty is NOT extended when a product fails. Therefore, if your refurbished unit "goes kaput" even one day after the ORIGINAL warranty expired, you're out of luck. Well, guess what happened?

To be fair, our refurbished unit functioned normally until recently. And, yes, we ultimately had five years of service between the two projectors. This, however, is where it gets really interesting. When our second (refurbished) unit failed, it had the exact same problem. Yet again we were stuck with a vertical, purple line. As a journalist with a long history of consumer advocacy, seeing the same failure on two projectors - consecutively, mind you - immediately caused me to suspect a "known issue" circumstance. By that, I mean a problem that arises frequently enough to warrant "unacceptable failure" or "recall" status. hink about it. What are the chances that a SINGLE customer would have the EXACT same problem TWICE IN A ROW ? ? ?

Since the projector failed, I have spoken with two Customer Resolution Reps at Epson, as well as five different Epson Dealers (see: Home Theater Installers). I got nowhere with the Epson Reps and, with my background in consumer advocacy, I knew that the best route would be to contact someone at corporate, which I did . . . or, attempted to do. First, I directed an e-mail to their CEO. I've dealt with Jeff Bezos, Michael Dell and dozens of other CEO's who never failed to (at the very least) offer the professional courtesy of a response. Epson's CEO Keith Kratzberg? Not so much as a "take a hike". I then forwarded that same correspondence to one of Epson's Senior VP's. Again, no response whatsoever. Sorry, but that failure to follow up with a consumer (much less an industry professional) is not only unacceptable, but casts a poor light on Epson's corporate ethics.

Now, here's the clincher. EVERY Epson Dealer I spoke with offered nearly IDENTICAL feedback. Honestly, I've never been so shocked and dismayed. Here's the overview. Epson (according to their own dealers) has two primary objectives. First, to advance their technology as quickly as possible in order to remain competitive. Secondly, to offer their products at a competetive price point. And, because technology changes so rapidly, consumers have to expect that quality control and product reliability "may be compromised". Okay . . . sure. If my $35 toaster fails due to the fact that it was cheaply made in order to also be sold inexpensively, I totally get that. BUT A $2500.00 PROJECTOR? REALLY? Worse yet, TWO of the Epson Dealers I spoke with (one of them working a repair bench at the Home Theater store) told me that, if my Epson outlasted its warranty, "I did well".

Sorry. Maybe I'm old school (okay, I'm definitely old school) but you cannot be serious! So, Epson is building products which consumers can expect to "maybe" outlast the warranty and, if they do, we're supposed to be grateful? All I can say is, "WOW!" Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the average person who buys a $2500 projector has the expectation that they'll be throwing that unit in the trash and buying a new one (or five) before their AV receiver (or any other home entertainment electronics) give up the ghost. Me? Not so much. To be sure, nobody in the industry mentioned any of this before we decided to go with a projection system. Had they done so, we would have gone in another direction - be it a more expensive product made by a company with higher standards or away from projectors entirely

So, in closing, here's the takeaway: Epson products, by their own dealer's admission, are "disposable". Therefore, don't expect "many years" of good service. Also, their product/quality control standards are poor, and not just from a longevity standpoint. In my mind (and most consumers, no doubt) if a particular issue surfaces regularly enough, the manufacturer has a responsibility to own that failure and make it right - meaning, fix the issue or replace the projector. The "purple, vertical line" issue (optical generator failure), as well as power supply issues, are well documented and conceded by Epson dealers. What will they do to remedy those ongoing issues? Nothing. "Go buy a new projector because the cost to repair the one you have (if we can get the parts) is prohibitive." And, finally, don't expect Epson to respond to correspondence, as any and every reputable business would do - because they won't.

My advice, for what it's worth? If you're one of those people who go out and buy the new I-phone the minute it comes out just because you insist on having the very latest tech, maybe you won't mind spending upwards of $3000.00 on a new projector every two years or so. If not, hang a giant flat screen on your wall knowing that you'll likely get eight or ten years of service. That, or buy something other than Epson. And, if it lasts more than two years, get back to me with the good news in order that our family can do likewise. In the meantime, I will be posting consumer reviews on as many sites as I can find as well as approaching editors seeking to publish my experiences with Epson in an attempt to save others from having the same excruciating experience!
