Su propósito no es solo aclarar la norma establecida, sino orientar también sobre lo no fijado mediante la formulación de propuestas guiadas por el ideal de unidad lingüística.

The Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts is a reference work made up of more than 70,000 entries, with information of a phonographic nature (pronunciation, accentuation, punctuation, spellings, etc.), morphological (plural, feminine, conjugation, etc.), syntactic (problems of construction and regime, concordance, leism, dequeism, etc.) or lexicosemantic (lexical improprieties, objectionable semantic copies, neologisms and foreign words or place names and gentilices of doubtful or hesitant spelling).
Its purpose is not only to clarify the established norm, but also to provide guidance on what is not fixed by formulating proposals guided by the ideal of linguistic unity.

About the Author

La Real Academia Española, fundada en 1713 por iniciativa de Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco y Zúñiga, marqués de Villena, es una institución con personalidad jurídica propia que tiene como misión principal velar por que los cambios que experimente la lengua española en su constante adaptación a las necesidades de sus hablantes no quiebren la esencial unidad que mantiene en todo el ámbito hispánico, según establece el artículo primero de sus actuales estatutos.

De conformidad con este mismo texto, la RAE debe «cuidar igualmente de que esta evolución conserve el genio propio de la lengua, tal como este ha ido consolidándose con el correr de los siglos, así como de establecer y difundir los criterios de propiedad y corrección, y de contribuir a su esplendor. Para alcanzar dichos fines, estudiará e impulsará los estudios sobre la historia y sobre el presente del español, divulgará los escritos literarios, especialmente clásicos, y no literarios que juzgue importantes para el conocimiento de tales cuestiones, y procurará mantener vivo el recuerdo de quienes, en España o en América, han cultivado con gloria nuestra lengua». Asimismo, la RAE, «como miembro de la Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española, mantendrá especial relación con las academias correspondientes y asociadas».

La Academia consta de cuarenta y seis académicos de número, elegidos por la institución «entre las personas que considere más dignas, en votación secreta y, como mínimo, por mayoría absoluta de votos», según queda fijado en los artículos octavo y décimo de los estatutos vigentes.
