This is a collection of essays, most published here for the first time, on Gilles Deleuze's ideas about history and science. Its focus is on ontological or metaphysical questions: What are the legitimate social entities that can be used in historical explanations, given a materialist metaphysics? What are the legitimate inhabitants of the material world, natural and artificial, and what role should science play in determining their legitimacy? What can philosophy contribute to this enterprise? --- Manuel DeLanda is the author of five philosophy books, War in the Age of Intelligent Machines (1991), A Thousand Years of Nonlinear History (1997), Intensive Science and Virtual Philosophy (2002), A New Philosophy of Society (2006), and The Emergence of Synthetic Reason (Forthcoming). He teaches two seminars at University of Pennsylvania, Department of Architecture: "Philosophy of History: Theories of Self-Organization and Urban Dynamics", and "Philosophy of Science: Thinking about Structures and Materials". He also holds the Gilles Deleuze chair at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.

Another wonderful book by one of the nicest contemporary of ours who "wants his Deleuze now" and shares his take on it with us, bringing much more to the plate by the way.

If you are paying attention, you are seeing Deleuze everywhere. His Postscript on the Societies of Control is eerily prescient and anyone who can effectively digest his concepts is decades ahead of the game in nearly any field. The only problem is that digesting his concepts natively is (for many of us) near to impossible. I struggled for decades with the primary texts, getting tied in knots by turgid language and deep, esoteric references. I tried a hand at most of the commentators (even the good ones like Hardt and Massumi) and, while they were helpful, the mountaintop still seemed too distant.

Then I cracked open DeLanda - 1000 Years of Non Linear History, I believe. The rosetta stone! By the time I was 1/2 finished with the book, vast sheets of Deleuze were coming clear to me. (Yes, even Difference and Repetition.) I tore through DeLanda's still too short bibliography, finding everything he had written on the Internet and handing out copies of his books to everyone I could convince to take one. Not only to open them up to the vista of Deleuze, but because DeLanda himself is a primary thinker of the first rank. The historical first rank, not merely among his 21st Century contemporaries. I don't care if you are a farmer or an architect, a software developer or a soldier - you will benefit from a strong dose of DeLanda.
