Only two "menus" both have the lentil stew pouch which is very good, the alternate is a beans w/ tomato sauce or a pasta w/ tomato sauce. All are on the bland/savory side but tasty as well. More pleasant than some of the other US MRE type menu items. Beans are the protein source, but are firm and not mush. Take away is these are equal to or better than a good quality canned/frozen baked beans/chili.
Two packs of the MRE square crackers. 1 pack strawberry jam (good), 1 pack creamy peanut butter (good). One double pack of fig bar (good condition & flavor). One double pack of strawberry pop-tarts (branded) w/ no frosting which are so-so flavor and condition. (I'm disposing of these). One shortbread cookie (good condition and decent flavor). US MRE type heavy brown plastic spoon packaged with a napkin, wet nap, salt & pepper, sugar, crushed red pepper packets. One book of regular paper matches (not moisture resistant type).
I plan on eating these in the next 12-18 months. Experience has been that the MRE system foods slowly ends up tasting more & more like the packaging past 5 years
So far I've only finished menu 1 and I'm working on menu 2 today. Both have come complete as far as the meals are concerned, and the quality is pretty good. Given what you recieve and for the price, these make a fantastic addition to any emergency food supply.
Now for the downsides.
The accessory packs from both menus had chili flakes instead of gum.
The accesory packs also had a moisture issue that resulted in the salt partially disolving and crystalizing outside of the paper wrapper. I'm not sure what the source is as the wet wipe is plenty wet with the wrapper intact, even with the staple on the matches being rusty.
More a question than a downside, but what am I expected to do with the sugar packets? Personally I have no issue just downing them, but there's no beverage or sensible item to mix them in with? Since I'd already tried the Oatmeal cookie as is from menu 1, I broke up the other from menu 2 and let it mix with water to make a porridge. It was good, but was plenty sweet on its own. So far I've just been dissolving it in a but of water, might try linking a cookie and dipping it in the sugar? Lol.
The vegetable crackers are alright, they worked well alongside the salt and pepper to improve the barley stew main. They're kind of weird with their savoriness when paired with the peanut butter and strawberry jam.
There's one serious issue with these rations. They're all supposed to be at least 2,200 calories. That's their minimum requirement, not the average. So why on earth was menu 1 less than 1,800 calories? That's not a small difference, and really not acceptable given it's not an accurate label and considering what these rations are meant for.
The upsides of this case, in my situation:
- You can eat them unheated or heated, though they're better warm
- As a vegetarian it's a relief to know I can get simple veggie-based meals to survive off of
- None of the packs I've opened have been spoiled or off so far; if one is I might update later
- I dislike overly salted or spiced food, so having blander, simpler options is refreshing
- I cannot drive and so getting food to my house can be expensive. Having a backup option is really helpful
- For the price, it's a lot of food that won't go bad quickly, and to me that's a huge benefit
Downsides I've noticed so far:
- Most of the menus are incredibly similar; this makes sense since they're supposed to be easy for anyone to eat, but can be boring if you expect more variety
- One of the strawberry jelly packs had a small hole and seeped out into the rest of the pack. Easy to clean, but a bit disappointing
- I was hoping for some MRE coffee, but haven't found any yet - I'll be looking for other kinds of packs so I can try it
In general, if you want survival food that's fairly inexpensive, simple, and inoffensive, this is a great choice overall. I particularly enjoyed the barley and vegetable stew, either cold or heated, and I've been enjoying the crackers as well. It is important to keep in mind that these are survival meals, so you can't expect 5 star restaurant quality from them, but they're still great for what they're intended to be and do. I know with these if I end up isolated or snowed in I'll have a fallback food that I can rely on, and that's exactly what I paid for.
In the future I'll be adding these to my list of survival gear and general products I keep around for a rainy day or desperate situation. I've also shared these with my dad - he's an avid survivalist and has been wanting to try MRE-style food for a while - so I'll get his opinion later.
