Coming from the church of San Bartolomeo di Monteoliveto, the "Annunciation" has been long considered the work of Domenico Ghirlandaio. It's assignment to the young Leonardo is dating back to the second half of the century.
The painting has not failed to arouse perplexity on the part of critics in the light of the most recent investigations on the different phases of Da Vinci's pictorial activity.
The archangel, leaning on a flower carpet thoughtfully described, is perhaps the most successful part of the painting.
