3rd Edition, 'Greatly Improved'. Full polished leather, with red/gilt title-label, and black/gilt volume-label to spines. Each vol. 22 x 27cm. The two volumes of plates, originally intended to be bound into the principal 18-volume work, are here bound separately, all plates being present, both for the main encyclopaedia and for the two-volume supplement (1801). Only the first volume of the supplement itself (Abe. to Imp.) is included here. Five raised bands to spines, with gilt ruling on either side. Gilt decoration to edges of boards. Volume XV of the main encyclopaedia is missing, as is the second volume of the Supplement (Vol. XX). Vol. I: front hinge split but just holding; Vol. VI: front board detached; Vol. VII: front board attached with adhesive tape; Vol. XIV: front board rather scuffed; Vol. XVII: front board poor; Vol. XVIII: front board repaired with adhesive tape but now detached; Vol. XXI (Plates I to CCXCIX): front board detached; Vol. XXII (remaining plates): rear board missing.
