A wonderfully unique piece of North African décor, Moroccan tagines aren’t just great for cooking and eating. Dress up your kitchen or dining room with some bohemian flair with the bold colors and flowing lines of this tagine.

The key ingredient in this Tagine’s creation is clay, sourced exclusively from the heart of Fes City, known as “Ben Jellik.” The clay undergoes a meticulous process, beginning with a 20-day drying period. Once dry, it is carefully broken into smaller pieces using large hammers, then left to dry further before being immersed in water for two days. Skilled hands meticulously remove impurities and unwanted materials from the clay. This specialized craftsmanship is unique to Fes City, where it thrives thanks to its close relationship with the sun.

Talented artisans shape this clay into a variety of exquisite forms, from flower vases to jars and plates, all crafted by hand, carrying forward an age-old tradition. After shaping, these handmade treasures are placed in an oven and fired at an astonishing 2000°C for eight hours. Subsequently, they are adorned with hues inspired by Moroccan fortunes, dining tables, and walls. Natural pigments sourced from the environment are applied using brushes made from horsehair, resulting in an array of colors, including vibrant blues, deep reds, and bold blacks. A final coating is added to enhance their luster before they return to the oven, where they bake on burning woods for another eight hours, ensuring their resilience for everyday use. These Tagines can accommodate both hot and cold liquids, with their paint designed to endure.

The artistry doesn’t stop here; the Tagine is adorned with Zellige patterns. These patterns are carefully selected by Nekkach, who draws from ancient references like Karaouiyn and the king’s palaces. Using a material known as “La resin” or “cola sima,” the patterns are affixed and allowed to dry. Upon completion, the Tagine is revealed in all its glory, showcasing the true craftsmanship of clay in the city of Fes.

Thank you for appreciating and supporting this unique tradition.
