The An-225 Mriya is a super-heavy transport aircraft created in 1988 by the Kyiv Antonov Design Bureau.
Until 2022, the An-225 was the largest and most powerful aircraft in the world. The aircraft was created for the needs of the Soviet space program: for transporting cargo, the Buran spacecraft and components of the Energia rocket system.
In the late 1990s it was reconstructed and modified to transport heavy loads. Performed commercial transportation. The An-225 with a maximum take-off weight of 640 tons was the heaviest aircraft in the world.
In 2004, the International Aeronautics Federation included the An-225 in the Guinness Book of Records for its 240 records.
On the 27th of 2022, the An-225 was destroyed in the hangar during the battle for the Gostomel airport during the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Russia destroyed the world's largest cargo plane, the An-225 Mechta, while trying to capture Kyiv. The remains of the aircraft are located in a dilapidated hangar on the territory of the airfield in Gostomel.
The second copy of the An-225 is located and partially built in Antonov’s hangars.
