Only 15 minutes from Residence Dorio we find the castle of Vezio

Easily reached by car from our residence hall is a spectacular terrace on Lake Como, Vezio Castle.

The earliest evidence of the castle’s existence dates back to the 11th century, but some scholars believe it may have been built in Roman times, as its strategic location made it an excellent control point over the lake and the road that connected Bellano to Esino Lario.

In medieval times, Vezio Castle was an important defensive bulwark for the town of Varenna. It was involved in numerous conflicts, including the war between Como and Milan, and was also home to an important monastic community.

In the 14th century, Vezio Castle began to decline. It was damaged by fire in 1335, and was then abandoned by its inhabitants. In the 16th century, the castle was bought by the Sfrondati family, who partially restored it.

In the 20th century, Vezio Castle was purchased by the Monti family, who completely restored it. The castle was opened to the public in 1956, and has been a major tourist attraction on Lake Como ever since.

Vezio Castle today is a fascinating example of medieval architecture. The 28-meter-high main tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and its surroundings. The castle also houses a falconry center, where you can observe and learn about these fascinating birds of prey up close.
