L. anceps 'Rodrigo x self' is a dark, barkeriana-type anceps, and is from an selfing of the Gold Medal winner 'Rodrigo' from the Mexican Orchid Society. This large 3-4 bulb division is a piece of the original plant and in bloom in December! We enjoy growing this Laelia outdoors under 50% shade in Northern California all year round.
October is a good time to buy them when the spikes are still relatively short, as when they reach 3 to 4 feet tall, not only is it more challenging to ship (risk of spike breaking in shipping), but it also costs much more because of the increase in box size!).
Laelia anceps, native to Mexico, can handle temperatures from over 100°F down to the mid 20's, making it one of the easiest Cattleya relatives to grow. It is also one of the most spectacular, with very pretty flowers up to 5" wide on spikes typically over two feet tall. colors range from white through shades of pink. Blooms November–January. Likes bright light, and fairly dry winters.
