Visual journalist Matt McKnight got caught up in a “tumbleweed tornado” on a drive near Richland, Washington — but still managed to capture the wacky wonder on video.
The footage was posted on Instagram by the Seattle-based, non-profit news site @Crosscut.
A startled McKnight told the BBC: “Initially I saw like one tumbleweed coming down the road and I was like, ‘Oh that’s pretty cool. Just a tumbling tumbleweed.’ Then I saw a group of them and I had to slow down a bit… I’ve seen plenty of dust devils, but I’ve never seen a dust devil that’s whipped up – I don’t even know how many tumbleweeds that was.”
