The USS Nimitz is back home at the naval shipyard in Bremerton. The big carrier and its crew is in the midst of training after more than a year in dry dock for maintenance.

The carrier returned from its last deployment in December of 2017 and was out of service.

Shipyard workers and crew spent the time painting spaces and rehabilitating thousands of square feet of deck.

“It has taken 15 months of sustained effort across the project to get to finishing it on time with all of the work done. Congratulations to everyone who was a part of the team. I couldn’t be more proud to be associated with this project. Well done,” said Capt. Kevin Lenox, the carrier's commanding officer.

Capt. Lenox said it's the crews top priority to finish training and get back out to sea.

The ship is one of the oldest in the fleet at 44 years, just six years shy of its expected lifespan.

Naval Base Kitsap is the homeport for the Nimitz and the USS Carl Vinson.

USS Pittsburgh moves to Bremerton for decommissioning

The USS Pittsburgh is now homeported at the shipyard in Bremerton. The Los Angeles class attack submarine was based in Groton, Connecticut.

A pair of tugboats moved the boat to dock on Tuesday.

Crews will spend the next two years 'de-fueling' the nuclear sub and preparing for inactivation.

The Navy will schedule an inactivation ceremony when the boat is prepped.
