Knight Online

Knight Online (Compare to World of Warcraft)

Knight Online is a basic MMORPG, or a massively-multiplayer-online-role-playing-game. Phew. Which means that you along with thousands upon millions of other players coexist in an online kingdom where you gain experience by completing quests given to you by an NPC (non-playable character), killing monsters, and doing battle with other human players.

When you create your character in the beginning, you can choose between El Morad (the human “good guys”) and Kaurus, the not-so-human “bad guys,” like the one in the picture wielding a sword and axe.  From there you can choose a gender, create a name, choose your occupation (Mage, Priest, Warrior, or Rogue) and assign basic character points relevant to your occupation choice.

Knight Online uses a basic percentage-based experience point leveling system.  For instance, as a level 1 character, killing a level 1 monster may give you anywhere between 5-25% of the experience needed to gain another level. Once your character is a level 20, however, killing the same monster will give you little or no experience, like say, 0.05%.  But, get into a party of players and take on a dragon, no matter what level you are, it’s going to give you some hefty rewards.

The problem with this game is that once you reach the higher levels, it takes foooooreeeever to level up. I’ve got a level 42 warrior and have had a level 42 warrior for about a month now.  I don’t play it that often but still, it takes too long.

Another problem is the graphics – not bad, but nowhere near World of Warcraft.  And while the game is completely free, there are several pay options that make sure you get in no matter how full the servers are, a problem a few years ago but with new servers up, it’s no longer an issue.  However, the Silver and Gold Account players are obviously pampered to, with extras like 10% extra XP for every kill, and weapons that aren’t available to free users.

A fun thing about this game is the monthly PvP (Player versus Player) battle, where everyone who is a certain level can join, and are separated into El Morad and Kaurus users.  When the match starts, it’s an all-out slugfest to determine the winning side, and the winners get to plunder the losers as well as enjoy a huge XP boost.

For all it’s flaws, the game is still fun when you know other people that are playing.  I had my brother and my fellow poor neighbors back home, and a few kids in college playing simultaneously.  If you’re going it alone, expect to tire of the game after a month or so.  My rating: 7/10
