Podać means that you want someone to give you something from hand to hand, but for example sth like "Can you give me this for a while?". Dać means that you want someone to give you sth, but for ever.

It can be Used in the same sittuation with a slightest difference in meaning.
Podać means to pass over,so
Możesz podać mi pilota?
Could you pass me the remote?
Or
Daj mi pilota. Give me the remote. Its more of a order than request. It's less polite :)
But you can easily make it more polite by adding 'móc':
Możesz dać mi pilota?
Could you give me the remote?
Although in this situation I'd use podać. Dać suggests that you might keep the thing that you were given for as long as you'd like.

When sth is in your sight, but other person is closer to this thing and you want this person to give it to you, you can say:
Podaj mi proszę chleb - Please give me bread
We also say: Podać komuś rękę - Give someone a hand
Podano do stołu - Dinner is served
Podaj mi saldo z rachunku - Give me the balance of my bank account
"Dać" has wider meaning

-you can give somebody something hand to hand
-you can also podać piłke (kick a ball)
2.dać has more meanings f.e. you can dać prezent ( give present)
