Klaus Haapaniemi and Finnish furniture company Nikari Oy joined forces for the London Design Festival.

The Finnish designer Klaus Haapaniemi has been defined as one of the most important rising stars in illustration and design. He has designed garment prints for Diesel, Levis, Marimekko, Dolce & Gabbana, worked as Creative Director of the Italian fashion house Bantam, published a book entitled ‘Giants’ together with the Finnish writer Rosa Liksom, produced illustrations for the Observer newspaper and shown his work in exhibitions. In Finland Haapaniemi has designed patterns for Marimekko and illustrated dishware collections for Iittala.

In 2010 Haapaniemi founded own design brand Klaus Haapaniemi and Co. together with art director and designer Mia Wallenius. The company produces home textiles, unique furniture, rugs, ceramics and home accessories.

The roots of the instantly recognisable style of Klaus Haapaniemi are deep in his Finnish cultural background. He feels that while taking years to shape into its current form, his style had a very natural beginning. "The style grew from my Finnish surroundings. I guess it could be classified as Scandinavian, but at the same time mythologies and folklore from other cultures have greatly influenced me also", Haapaniemi tells.

Last year the London-based designer opened a shop in Shoreditch for his own collection Klaus Haapaniemi & Co. The line of products available in the store includes pillows, shawls, ceramics, rugs, prints and other items made from high quality materials.

This autumn Klaus Haapaniemi & Co. expanded its product portfolio with new pieces, hand crafted furniture, fabrics, pendant lights, traditional Japanese ceramics and silk sleep wear. The new collection Nocturnal Bloom was made in co-operation with Nikari Oy, Finnish manufacturer of sustainable wood design products.

"Midsummer Night's Dream was my source of inspiration for this collection as well as floral patterns and Finnish jugend", Haapaniemi explains.

The new collection includes traditional Japanese ceramics.

The new collection Nocturnal Bloom was launched at the Finnish Ambassador's Residence in Kensington Palace Gardens. The venue for the launch is very unique. "This is a very fine classical space. It's great to show the collection here also because of residence's location close to other Design Festival events", says Haapaniemi.

New collection is also displayed in Haapaniemi's shop in Shoreditch. Nikari Oy produces wooden furniture and custom-made furnishings of the local certified wood to public premises as well as private homes.

Nocturnal Bloom at the Finnish Ambassador's Residence on Thu 18th Sep (1–5pm) and Fri  19th Sep (10–5pm). New collections by Haapaniemi displayed together with furniture by Nikari in Klaus Haapaniemi & Co. flagship shop in Shoreditch until Sunday 21st Sep (open daily 117pm).
