Tuesday night’s hot mike moment on The Voice when the Maroon 5 frontman and coach on the showclaimed to “hate this country,” after two of his contestant’s were voted off the singing competition, sparked yet another round of Levine tweets. He later explained it was a joke made in an emotional moment. But last night’s performance was just another comment to add to the stack of bold declarations from the world’s most-tattooed nice Jewish boy. Let’s look back: Sure, he regularly teases fellow coach Blake Shelton via Twitter: But Levine is also known for creating controversy over his opinionated tweets and statements that he rarely apologizes for or rescinds. In 2011, he told Nakia, a contestant on the first season of The Voice, that he had never heard the song Nakia performed (Adam Lambert’s “Whataya Want From Me”) and that he was sure Nakia’s performance was better than the original. Lambert and Nakia both took to Twitter to defend Levine’s comment, to which he responded: “I had honestly never heard that song before. I thought that @nakia made me like a song that would have otherwise fallen flat. I’m NOT sorry.” Following that incident, he told Out magazine that he disagrees with the way rival singing competition shows have dealt with contestants’ sexuality. “What’s always pissed me off about Idol is wanting to mask that, for that to go unspoken… come on. You can’t be publicly gay? At this point? On a singing competition? Give me a break! You can’t hide basic components of people’s lives.” During the 2012 presidential election, Levine — a vocal supporter of President Obama — tweeted a general threat to Fox News: “Dear Fox News, don’t play our music on your evil f**king channel ever again. Thank you.” This prompted a flurry of responses, calling the singer’s band “Moron 5,” telling him to “remember what happened to the Dixie Chicks” and telling him he had lost fans. Fox News anchors retaliated on Twitter and on their show by insulting Levine’s music. (Fox News has similarly responded to Levine’s comments last night with a blog post called “Adam Levine Hates America.”) He even started in on a branch of the industry that made him famous, making his feelings about MTV very clear. “the VMA’s. one day a year when MTV pretends to still care about music.
