Where to find Matshita firmware?

So it appears that i'm victim of the bogus optical firmware nonsense, my drive was working perfectly fine one day and the next day it will not mount any DVD's and only some CD's

So i've been looking to reflash my optical with any other firmware to see if this helps...thinking that i could bootcamp in with a WinXP flash but i cannot find any other firmware for this Matshita UJ-85J drive anywhere on the interwebz?!

I'm almost resorting to replacing the drive, i've found non-apple blessed models on eBay for a bill or i can get the real deal for $275 with core trade from the local apple repair shop

so what's the deal here...i'm afraid that i toss in a new optical and then the next OSX update rewrites it again and 'effs it all up

i use my optical drive everyday, i burn dvds and cd's all the time...so this is crippling to me and i need to fix this

17mbp 2.33 - matshita UJ-85J, Mac OS X (10.5.4), 500gb Samsung Spinpoint M6 & 3gb ram

My MatSHITa drive is acting up horribly too...for weeks it's incredibly unreliable for dual-layer disks (and not just the cheap kind), and erasing rewriteables has been an adventure hair pulling.

That said, I wouldn't trust that firmware page...they're hacks for making the drive region free and there's a fat disclaimer about warranty voiding.

The problem is MatSHITa (ie. Panasonic) only makes these drives as OEM's; they refuse to answer questions and tell you to contact the computer manufacturer...
