Synopsis
In the early 1930s, an impressive house designed by the renowned architect von Abt was built on a hill above Brno. This modernist masterpiece of concrete and steel, featuring a central "Glass Room," was created for the wealthy businessman Viktor Landauer, his wife Liesel, and their family. The Glass Room not only became an architectural marvel but also symbolized beauty, modernity, openness, and the hopes of the young Czechoslovak nation. Liesel envisioned a family life filled with light, peace, and love, enhanced by her bond with her inseparable friend Hana. However, their tranquil existence is disrupted as Europe falls under the shadow of Nazism, prompting the Jewish Viktor to prepare for exile. The situation worsens when Liesel discovers Viktor's affair with Káťa, a young war refugee they had sheltered. As Liesel grows closer to Hana, who relishes life's pleasures as a free thinker, the German invasion throws their lives into chaos, leading to a dramatic escape from Czechoslovakia. Despite the war and the subsequent devastation of the villa, the hope symbolized by the Glass Room endures, with Hana seizing an opportunity to return to the magical space, reviving memories of Liesel and a pre-war era filled with promise. Their separation intensifies their unspoken feelings, as they write letters without receiving responses, each unaware of the other's fate.
