Francesco Vezzoli in Florence

La Musa dell’Archeologia piange (2021)

Pietà (2021)

For the project Francesco Vezzoli in Florence, the Italian artist Francesco Vezzoli conceives two monumental sculptures which deal with the antique world while addressing the symbolic entities of the city, in a linguistic collage that regenerates the forms of tradition, creating a surreal world made of archaeology, fantasy, memory, and invention. Curated by Cristiana Perrella and Sergio Risaliti, presented by Museo Novecento in Florence and Centro Pecci di Prato, and supported by the Municipality of Florence and Mus.e organization, the project is on view from October 3 to February 3.

The first sculpture, Pietà (2021), placed in Piazza della Signoria, depicts a monumental, rampant lion which holds in its jaws a II century’s Roman head, in a pastiche of different artistic periods, typical of the artist’s latest production. Piazza della Signoria confirms itself as the beating heart of the contemporary art scene in Florence, as the work by Vezzoli, enlarges the list of renowned artists who already contributed to the definition of the new set-up of the square: Jan Fabre, Urs Fisher, Jeff Koons, and Giuseppe Penone.

La Musa dell’Archeologia piange (2021), second sculpture of the project, is located in the Studiolo of Francesco I de’ Medici, a precious casket full of mysterious iconographic, esoteric and astrological suggestions realized between 1569 and 1573, placed in Palazzo Vecchio. In the sculpture, which homages the renowned painting The Archaeologist by Giorgio De Chirico, a “metaphysical” bronze head is grafted onto a figure of a Roman togato.
