| Description |
The American Bantam Car Company designed the first Jeep for the American Army in 1940. Built specifically for military use in World War II, was the Willys-Overland Model MB and the Ford GPW. They first went into production in 1941, they were the first mass produced four wheel drives. Willys went on to produce civilian models after the War, the civilian version of the military Jeep was the CJ (Civilian Jeep), it was built from 1945-49. Also built in the 40s, was the Willys Jeep Wagon (1946-65), the Willys Jeep Truck (1947-65) and the Willys Overland Jeepster (1948-50), all built on the same platform. 1947, Truck and Panel Van versions of the Wagon introduced. 1948, the sporty 2 door VJ Jeepster introduced, it got a luxury spec 1949, 4WD was now an option. 1950: the flat grille was replaced by a pointed v-shape design 1954, horizontal slats in the grille were reduced from 5 to 3 and a 6 cyl available 1958, the upmarket Maverick model was introduced, stainless steel trim around the windows and two tone paint. Replaced in 1965 by the Jeep Wagoneer. Engine; 75hp 134 cu in 4 cyl |
