Kurt Sanderling, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra

Description:

A project for the 10th anniversary of his death. The solid interpretation by Sanderling convinces listeners of Shostakovich's image as the best of the former East Germany. A masterful performance with a soft and profound sound. The world's first SACD release of Nos. 1, 6, and 10! Mastered only in analog domain and directly converted to DSD! Excellent recording. The 15th SACD hybridization of the latest reissue project of the original ETERNA analog tapes from his home country. In 1960, he was invited by the East German government to return to Germany, where he became principal conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (now the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra). He has been the principal conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (now the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra) since its inception in 1960, and has developed it into a world-class orchestra. This collection of Shostakovich's symphonies was recorded in analog stereo by the East German company Eterna between 1976 and 1983, when the relationship between the two orchestras was maturing. The interpretation by Sanderling, who had exchanged ideas with the composer, is a faithful rendering of every detail of the score, with a deeply carved expression of symphonic layers of sound, and more than enough use of Shostakovich's diverse character, from light humor to heartbreaking cries, all wrapped in the soft and profound sound that only a German orchestra can provide. The music is soft and profoundly resonant, as only a German orchestra can be. Therefore, even at the climax of the piece, the music does not become a screech, but maintains an organic sound, which makes the performance stand out from the many stimulating performances. However, as mentioned above, the shifting scenes of the music are fully expressed, and the most musical and meaningful Shostakovich performance is achieved. Eterna's excellent late-period analog recording of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra's performance also captures the grandeur, weight, and softness of the scale of the orchestra's sound. The high sound quality of the new recording has made it possible to understand the details even more. You can even feel the atmosphere of the time when the recording was made. For this reissue, the master tapes were flown from the label to the studio of Christoph Stickel, a mastering engineer living in Vienna, where they were mastered in the analog domain, and then digitized separately in DSD for the SACD layer and PCM for the CD layer. The project was then digitized into a product. This project was mastered in the most ideal way conceivable today. The effect is remarkable: it is now possible to reproduce the quality left on the master tapes with extreme fidelity, and the mastering and direct DSD conversion in the analog domain only has even greater sonic benefits. The result is a performance that is so clear and resolved compared to its predecessor that one can expect to appreciate the performance even more. The manual also includes a color photo of the outer box of the original analog master tapes used in this project. (1/2)
