Visiting Keukenhof Gardens, Holland

Amsterdam, Europe, Travel / Thursday, June 1st, 2023

I am finally sitting down to write this post after visiting Keukenhof Gardens a month ago! I have so many beautiful photos just sitting on my phone and this place deserves its own blog post. I have a few tips including when to visit, how to get there, what to wear, places to eat, and what to see and do once you’re there. Save this post for your future visit to Holland, as the gardens are only open a few weeks in the Spring!

When to Visit Keukenhof Gardens

Keukenhof will be open again daily from March 21 – May 12, 2024. Tickets will become available beginning mid-October.

As for planning when to visit during the roughly seven weeks that Keukenhof is open, I recommend going towards the end of the season. We went the last weekend in April and found everything to be in bloom, whereas my friends who visited earlier felt it wasn’t blooming as much then.

Plan a visit earlier in the day. The crowds only continued to grow as the afternoon progressed.

Getting to Keukenhof Gardens

We opted for a combo ticket from Amsterdam that included bus transportation to and from Keukenhof as well as our entrance tickets. I was really impressed with how efficient the entire process was. The buses were not overcrowded and we didn’t have to wait long. You can also drive to Keukenhof, but the entrance line for individual cars was very long by the time we left.

What to Wear to Keukenhof Gardens

Dress comfortably for the weather or come ready for photos. This is THE place for beautiful spring family photos. Keukenhof is dog-friendly as well so you can even dress up your pooch. We got very lucky with the perfect sunny day.

Eating at Keukenhof Gardens

There are numerous places to grab snacks, breakfast or lunch throughout the gardens including a main pavilion and food trucks. We enjoyed the retro feel of the ice cream carts scattered throughout the gardens. You can also bring your own picnic.

What to See & Do at Keukenhof Gardens

Flowers are of course the main attraction at Keukenhof. I’ve never seen so many varieties of tulips in so many vibrant colors in my life. Everything is meticulously manicured and beautiful. There are pathways dotted with benches taking you through the gardens, and you’ll find unique sculptural elements along the way. There is an enormous windmill where you can board a whisper boat for a tour through the flowering bulb fields surrounding Keukenhof. There is also a giant maze, a petting zoo, and a large playground plus numerous shops with souvenirs and tulip bulbs for purchase. Several pavilions are located throughout the gardens housing themed flower shows as well as an historical garden where you can see tulip varieties dating back to the 17th century. Keukenhof is truly a flower lover’s paradise.
