Rare Antique Les Miserables Set by Victor Hugo
A rare and decorative full set of Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. Published in the late 19th century by The John C. Winston Company, Philadelphia (no date). Published around 1890. The covers are unique in flamingo pink cloth with ornate gilt decoration on the backstrip. The cloth on the backstrip is faded to pale pink. The back covers match the front covers. Size: 7.75 x 5.5". Volume 1 (Fantine): There is faint soiling on the backstrip and back cover along the backstrip connection. There is a penned signature on the right endpaper dated 1906. There is a frontispiece illustration. The title page and interior pages are mildly tanned throughout. Some of the outer page edges are deckled. The interior pages are clean. 377 pages.
Volume 2 (Cosette): There is a discoloration spot on the backstrip near the center on the left. There is a light soil spot on the back cover near the upper right corner. The endpapers are clean. There is a frontispiece. The interior pages are stiff, clean and mildly tanned throughout. 345 page.
Volume 3 (Marius): The covers are very good. The endpapers are clean. There is a shadow rectangle on the title page. There is a frontispiece illustration. There is at least one additional illustration on slick paper. The interior pages are stiff and mildly tanned throughout. 308 pages.
Volume 4 (Saint Denis): There is a white discoloration spot on the cover near the lower right corner. There is a soil spot on the upper right corner of the back cover. The endpapers are clean. There is a shadow square on the title page from the frontispiece. There is at least one additional black and white illustration on slick paper. The interior pages are stiff and mildly tanned throughout. 434 pages.
Volume 5 (Jean Valjean): The cover has light warping of the cloth (center). There is light discoloration on the upper left cover corner. There is a shadow on the title page from the frontispiece. The interior pages are mildly tanned and stiff throughout. 367 pages.
